Camping in LA - Lower Alabama that is!!!!

We just returned from a few days in the Caravanner. What started as a photo adventure in FL ended up to be a wonderful adventure. We started out at Big Lagoon SP in Penascola, FL. The park was still feeling the effects of Ivan and it looked like a war zone (Facilities were working and clean.) We were able to overlook it because the wildlife was great! We saw herons, hawks, ospry, and turtles. On our second night power went out at 1AM in 95 degree heat. The staff could not tell us when it would be back on and offered a refund which we took advantage of. We hooked up and went to Gulf Shores SP which had plenty of space. This park was completely wiped out from Ivan but was promptly rebuilt by the state. While this was not my idea of camping (ie asphalt pads). We had a place that was relativly private, clean, quiet and only 2 minutes to the best beach on the Gulf. The seafood was great ! There were no fast food restaurants or chains to be seen (we don't need a Starbucks because our coffee is better). These folks appreciate your business and go out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. If you are heading down there, make Gulf Shores a stop, you will not regret it! Oh, did I mention great seafood!!!

When you were at Gulf Shores State Park, were you camping "on the beach" with a 2 minute walk to the sand and waves or were you a 2 minute drive away from the beach parking.

It was a 2 minute drive or a 15 minute walk to the new pavilion on Gulf Shores beach. The parking lot was only $2 for campground guests and parking on a hot Saturday was first row and steps to the sand.

Good to know about Pensacola, I would have thought they we up and running, at least before Gulf Shores.

Any photos of each place?

Long walk at both places?

I will try to post some later. Big Lagoon had a nice boardwalk in the park where you can view wildlife (Birds, Gators, Fox, Deer) At Gulf Shores, it was a short drive to the beach. We did not explore much of the park but it looked nice.

We stopped at Mystic Springs twice last week. On the way to Bates RV to get our Safari Sport 17, and then on our return trip. On the outbound trip we were treated like pioneering heros headed into the unknown for a new untested 2008 model airstream. Guests of honor at the cookout, and given tours of some of the neatest vintage airstreams I have ever seen. There were about 25 people there. One week later we returned happily towing our new Sport 17. The hosts were there waiting for us. Counting them there were all of two occupied airstreams there. So we had the place to ourselves. Very pretty sight. Very quiet. My wife the birdwatcher found a pileated woodpecker hanging around. These are very shy and very LARGE woodpeckers, look like something from a few million years ago. This was only the third one I have seen in my 57 years. I posted some thoughts about the trip and new trailer "on the road" titled Safari Sport 17.

Nice trailer, Mystic Springs is a great place. You may want to check out the 2008 Can Opener, you would meet a great group and have some fun. Everyone then could see your new trailer.

jdthor, you should come if you can. Your dance card would be full during the tour of homes! I'd love to see the new Sport myself. Seriously, we have a great time, great fellowship, and great food. It's a great way to start the new camping year. My wife and I have decided to make the Can Opener an annual event for our family.
