Camping between Johnson City TN and Roanoke VA. Overwhelmed

Tomorrow I will be traveling into VA there seems to be too many options... so looking for experienced advice. Iíll be coming up from NC via I-26 to I-81 and then on to the north. Iím looking for an interesting overnight (or 2) stop in that area; not too far off the route. My trailer is about 24í in length and I am equipped and prefer to boondock. TIA
Clint

Stony Fork Campground outside Wytheville, Va is nice. It is a National Forest campground. Big Walker Lookout is on the mountain behind it. Climbing the homemade tower is pretty exciting on a windy day.

Grindstone, another National Forest campground, is nice. It is about 20 miles off 81. It is outside Marion, Va. Raccoon Branch and Hurricane are also National Forest campgrounds. You would pass them on the way to Grindstone.

You also have Hungry Mother SP in Marion and Claytor Lake in Dublin.

Rural Retreat Lake campground in Wythe County is also nice. It is less than 5 miles off 81.

All of the ones I named are within an hour of each other. The farthest ones in Marion are about 100 miles from Roanoke.

Of course, you also have Highland Haven AS park. It is in Floyd. You would get off 81 in Christiansburg.

If you prefer to boondock all the NFS campgrounds mentioned are great. We stayed at Rural Retreat about 10 years ago and drove through there recently on our way to Grindstone and donít really recommend it.
Yes, lots of good options.

Florence evacuees?

Have you checked the current status of any campgrounds? Guessing there will be many evacuees from Florence competing for space IMO. Please report back.

I-95 is closed in NC in two spots apparently, although your route may be west of that snag. Expect flooding on the east side of The Appalachians, both north and south of NC IMO.

See Florence thread radar and projected loop-de-loop tracks in recent posts:

Thanks,

NFS CGs were all closed. Hungry Morger closed too. They evacuated the NFS parks on Friday and had to have authorization to reopen. Even though no damage. I ended up at Grayson Highlands. It was wet at first but still a good experience. Very nice people and lots of hiking opportunities. One of the 2 VA stare parks on the appliachian trail. Mount Rogers right there. If I go back it will be for a longer stay. It’s about an hour off of I-81 south of Marion. I’m here in Culpeper and still feels like I driving. Lots of hills and curves.

We camped recently at Grindstone (site 94) but went to Grayson Highlands to hike and see the wild ponies. We look forward to a return trip. The sites at Grindstone were huge and well shaded. No reservations needed if you were on a dry camping site.

Failed to mention the wild ponies. They are the reason many visit Mount Rogers area.
