Camping & Rails to Trails?

We are looking for campgrounds that are located on or near any rails to trails. Does anyone have any information on such campgrounds? We'd like to combine some riding and camping. Thanks!

In their wisdom they link hotels but not campgrounds. Only way to do it would be to find area, get map and then do google by city or county for campgrounds. Haven't seen any CG guides that link to bike trails.

A long way to go, but . . .

Mineral Wells State Park in Mineral Wells Texas is has a rails to trail trail. I realize it's a long way from Pennsylvania but if you are ever in Texas or thinking about a cross country trip, you might check it out.

If you ever head to Florida for the Winter season, check out the Withlacoochee Trail. There is a campground on the trail and it passes through several towns where you can stop for a bite to eat. But most of the trail is in rural areas and swamp. It's a great flat ride.

Minnesota has the most converted railways to bike trails of any state. Wonderful summer weather and scenic uncrowded trails, farmland and woodland, we ride them often. There are many camping opportunities near the trails, some just small village parks.

Missouri has a great trail from just outside Kansas City to St Louis. It's a beautiful trail and very well maintained. Its the Katy Trail.

You may want to check out Old Town, Florida. We enjoyed spending time in the area camping at the Suwannee River Hideaway. Several miles (I don't remember how many) of Rails to Trails with some great rides to nearby small towns.

While Lehigh Gorge State Park in PA doesn't have camping, it does have a very nice (and long) bike path along the river. There are nearby state parks that do have campsites.

Green Lakes State Park near Syracuse NY is within riding distance to the Erie Canal bike path. It's a pretty nice campground.

When we stayed for a week at the Pennwood Airstream park near Limestone Pa, a couple of the longer term residents were kind enough to tae me along on a bike ride on a rails to trails trail.

It was maybe a 20 minute drive by car from the park, and I think there may be others in the area.

Pennwood park itself - if you haven't need there was great, both the park and the people we met!

I wanted to (finally) come back and update this thread. We camped at a city-owned campground called North Beach right on Lake Champlain just north of Burlington, Vermont. You can walk (20 minutes) or ride into town on a lovely paved trail alongside the lake. Or you can ride further away from Burlington and explore some causeways along the lake.

Wonderful riding, decent park (well-kept but tight spots and close to the city's high school, adding some noise from the athletic fields), great city. We'll be back.

Hiawatha bike trail

For a great rail to trail bike trip you should try the route of the Hiawatha. It is in near St.Regis Montana. It has tunnels and plenty of trestles. What is really nice is that there is great boondocking site nearby.

check with the state DNR. Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin have designated bike trail maps and there are campgrounds listed on them. Also check with the local Bike shops, some have a rack with local maps.

Well I am told that the DAYTON,Ohio area has the longest bike trails in the USA and I hear people come from all over the USA to ride them. Im not a bike rider and only know hear-say. I do believe that most of the trails are old rail beds. Sorry I dont have a web-site for you but Check the OHIO DNR.

Idaho's Heyburn State Park just east of Plummer is located about 6 miles from the beginning of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, a 72 mile rails to trails classic. This paved bike path is well maintained, scenic and relatively easy. Heyburn State Park is the oldest park in the PNW, established in 1908 and has several campgrounds, one with hook-ups.

A year or so back we stumbled upon such a place as you describe -- in Old Town, Florida. As I remember there were a few campgrounds in the area; we stayed at Suwannee River Hideaway. Great bike rides (Rails to Trails) to some of the nearby small towns. An interesting area that we were content to spend several days exploring. It really is like "old Florida". Check your map -- as I remember it is west of Dunnellon. If this sounds like something you may be interested in, pm me and I'll dig out my notes. Good manatee watching in the area -- Homosassa Springs comes to mind.

York PA campground alongside rail-trail

Last year we stayed at Indian Rock Campground which is adjacent to the Heritage Rail Trail which runs from York PA south to the Mason-Dixon line and then connects with other trails in Maryland. Campground was on the smaller side (there were several Airstreams and the host said they hosted rallys of Airstreamers) but the best thing is it's right along the trail. We never moved the truck all weekend.

Here is the campground
Indian Rock Campground, Camping, Hiking, Recreation

Here is the rail-trail
Heritage Rail Trail County Park

I see you are in Indiana Pennsylvania so this should be about 3 hours from where you live.

Enjoy.

Here is one in Alabama-Georgia the Alabama portion is called Chief Ladiga Trail. The GA portion is the Silver Comet Trail. I am sure there are areas to camp near the trail. The GA portion I think goes through some National Forrests.

Jamaica state park in Jamaica Vermont. The campground is on an old railroad line with trails on the old rail bed along the river. We love it and it is one of our go to campgrounds during the year.
