A year or so back we stumbled upon such a place as you describe -- in Old Town, Florida. As I remember there were a few campgrounds in the area; we stayed at Suwannee River Hideaway. Great bike rides (Rails to Trails) to some of the nearby small towns. An interesting area that we were content to spend several days exploring. It really is like "old Florida". Check your map -- as I remember it is west of Dunnellon. If this sounds like something you may be interested in, pm me and I'll dig out my notes. Good manatee watching in the area -- Homosassa Springs comes to mind.

York PA campground alongside rail-trail

Last year we stayed at Indian Rock Campground which is adjacent to the Heritage Rail Trail which runs from York PA south to the Mason-Dixon line and then connects with other trails in Maryland. Campground was on the smaller side (there were several Airstreams and the host said they hosted rallys of Airstreamers) but the best thing is it's right along the trail. We never moved the truck all weekend.

Here is the campground

Here is the rail-trail

I see you are in Indiana Pennsylvania so this should be about 3 hours from where you live.

Here is one in Alabama-Georgia the Alabama portion is called Chief Ladiga Trail. The GA portion is the Silver Comet Trail. I am sure there are areas to camp near the trail. The GA portion I think goes through some National Forrests.

Jamaica state park in Jamaica Vermont. The campground is on an old railroad line with trails on the old rail bed along the river. We love it and it is one of our go to campgrounds during the year.
