Campfire Lodgings, an small independent campground on a mountainside near Asheville, and Mount Pisgah State Park (no hook-ups but otherwise wonderful). Joe

Any of the Parkway National Park campgrounds. Minimal services of course but hard to beat the prices. Especially if you have an access pass. They are located within short days drive from each other. Mount Pisgah State Park is another beautiful stop to spend a relaxing few days. This past summer I end to ended the Parkway and stayed at every NPS campground. Some days only accounted for 20 miles road travel. I spent 17 days on the Parkway. Boondocking the whole time. Looking forward to a return trip in the Spring or next Fall.

Don't forget the Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park on the plateau just south of Roanoke Va., open May 1 - Oct 15; about six miles down the road from the Blue Ridge Parkway put-in at Adney Gap.

Camping and Destinations Near the Blue Ridge Parkway

There is a great little town, Floyd, Virginia, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Southwest Virginia. Floyd is one of the recommended stops on the Crooked Road, a series of destinations to hear and experience in person the beautiful traditional mountain music of this area.

There is a very nice campground, Chantilly Farms, about 6 miles from Floyd.

Then there is the Floyd Country Store where music is presented live on most Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights by some really fine musicians. If you like traditional/heritage music it just doesn't get any better.

We just returned from a four day trip today and had a great time.

If stopping at VHH try to make it on the weekend. There is some great music in Floyd. Bring your instrument and join the jams.

We've stayed at Lake Powhatan and enjoyed it. We selected it mainly for it's proximity to Asheville. We also just got back from 5 nights at Smokemont and really enjoyed our time there. There's many trails and creeks to fish in. They also have a stable if you want to take some time doing the trails on horseback. Have a great time!

Mount Pisgah is the highest campground and can be a little wet due to fog. We spent 11 nights there in August 2015 and enjoyed it. There are showers and flush toilets. No electric or water. Good access to Brevard, Davidson River, and the hiking is great. Many waterfalls close by. If your GPS wants to take you up on highway 151 don't do it unless you are pulling a Bambi with four wheel drive. Get on the parkway from I 26.

Linville Falls is also good but no showers. It is lower than Pisgah so not as cool in the Summer months. A hike to the falls is worth it if they get some rain.

Lake Powahatton is the most civilized with large paved sites and full hook ups.

We stayed at all three and enjoyed all.

Except for Powhatton you should get a drive up site with no problem.

The NC Arboretum is terrific and close to Lake Powahatton.
