Campgrounds on Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia

Any suggestions for camping in Shenoadoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia? We like usually lean to staying in the National and State Parks rather than commercial. TIA
Victoria

Campground: BIG MEADOWS
Site: E185

If you like a view out the back of the site over a beautiful valley where you can watch the sunrise, this is the one. The best site in the campground. You won't be disappointed

Peaks of the Otter

This one is a beautiful site that we have stayed at several times.
There is the campgound run by the NPS which has always had sites available anytime we have been through there. All the sites are in the woods across the lake from the lodge. There is great hiking a nature walks in the area.

Blue Ridge Parkway: Peaks of Otter

Welcome to the Peaks of Otter Lodge, Bedford Virginia

Our favorite is Loft Mountain, followed by Big Meadows.

Campgrounds near BRP in Va

BRP is a magical place. We've heard only good things about Virginia Highlands AS Park, although we haven't stayed there. We can also vouch for Fairystone State Park where we camped nearly a week in Summer 2015. We were very impressed with the Virginia State Park facilities in general --- they were clean, well situated, well staffed, and in good repair. We were disappointed with Peaks of Otter, a National Park, despite its location directly on the Parkway. Sites were readily available, as another reply points out, but facilities and campsites were in embarrassingly poor repair at the time of our visit and we found it a real challenge to find a site where we had a hope of getting level with our 25'. No hookups of any sort there.

There's also a very nice looking set of Army Corps of Engineers Campgrounds on Philpott Lake that is worth checking out. We drove in, but didn't camp there. Cheers.

I thought the BR Pkwy didn't allow trailers, but it seems they are ok.

We stayed at the motel at Peaks of Otter maybe 8 years ago (pre-Airstream)—motel was strange (I can only remember things were weird and the room seemed to be decorated by someone slightly crazy) and the restaurant (food and service) were pretty bad. It was a very nice setting looking out over one or two small lakes and forested hills.
