Campgrounds in the Shenandoah Valley

Thinking of next summer already, I was wondering if anyone had any specific recommendations for campgrounds in the Shenandoah Valley. I think our only requirement is a full hookup as we'll probably want to stay for a week. Ideas and suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi,
Yes, I know - most 'Streamers avoid KOAs, but this one has a good reputation: Staunton/Walnut Hills KOA near Staunton, VA. Because we live here, we've never stayed there, but folks who have find it a nice central location in the Valley for explorations north to Winchester and south to Roanoke. Let us know when you're coming and we'll treat you to dinner at The Devils Backbone on OUR side of the Blue Ridge, music with Jennifer and Burt at The Stonewall Jackson Hotel in Staunton, and other fun things in our Blue Ridge. Welcome Home!

Also, if you want to stay further south, near Floyd, VA, you should not miss Highland Haven, and AS-only park in the Blue Ridge. Here I am in Site #10 enjoying an adult beverage last Spring.

So how much does something like that cost $100 a night?

About $25 per night as I recall for FHU. Here's their site: http://vahighlandhaven.org/

I'll second the KOA. Hosted a Vintage Airstream Rally there a few years back with 48 trailers, everyone had a great time. That location puts you about in the middle of the Valley which allows for many sites to be seen within an hour to hour 1/2 drive from Winchester, VA to Roanoke, VA (north/south) and over to Charlottesville (east) and the Geore Washington National Forest all around you to the west/north/south and the Skyline Drive to the east.

Greg, I'll be down your way soon in Massies Mill. If you see a 1966 Overlander next to the "Mighty Tye" on Rt.56 that will be me. My guess, you know some of my wifes family if you have been down that way for more than 3 days.

Enjoy,

Can anyone make recommendations on the Primative sites up on the Skyline Drive?

When you look at the sites on the "ridge" does anyone have any suggestions from staying up there?

Many thanks,

Lin.

Haven't had our AS on the Ridge, but we have camped at Big Meadows with our old popup and found it to be a great facility. No hookups, but very nice.

We like Loft Mountain cg in the SNP. Great sunsets, lots of wildlife and the App Trail skirts the cg. No hookups, but they do have showers next to the camp store.

Just south of the Skyline, we like Sherando Lake, a national forest cg.

Greg, Thanks for the recommendations. I'm not averse to KOA so I'll give that one a look; it's a long way off yet but the more info I get the better prepared I'll be.

Thank you that helps a lot!

It is so nice to hear from people who actually camp at an area!

Many times I am terribly disappointed from CG's websites.

Happy Holidays!

with hookups?

Blue Ridge and Skyline drive are possible destinations for me next year. Any known sites (state parks prefered) with hookups? Electric is the one I want most, showers at the campground is fine. The second part of the trip will be Cass WV, for the train. Anyone stay in the State parks near Cass? MPJ

@moparjohn: Our posts #2, 3, and 9 above are good starts. Sherando Lake is particularly nice; out of the way, quiet, clean. Just electric as I recall, but reservations are taken so you are assured a site. We live on the other side of the Blue Ridge from there, and used it as our First Shakedown Camp just after we bought The Silver Otter this spring. Very nice.

The Cass Scenic RR is a nice destination, but we haven't camped in the Lewisburg/Greenbrier, WV, area so I can't recommend anything over there.
