We plan on staying at Big Meadows. It is walk-in only right now. We enter on 33 at Thornton Gap then drive S about 20 miles. Guess if we can do Colorado we can manage the curvy mountains of the Appalachians. I don't mind going 35 or slower.

I've camped at Big meadow, loft mountain and Misty mountain. Big meadow and loft mountain are on skyline drive so have spectacular views and great hiking but don't have hookups. Misty mountain has hookups and some good hiking trails and is about 5 minutes from the entrance to skyline drive. There are also two very good breweries (blue mountain and star hill) 5 minutes from there. If I'm remembering correctly, big meadow had more shade than loft mountain, so if you're there when it's hot, that might be a consideration due to the lack of electric hookups.

I think I'd rather camp at misty mountain and then just drive the tow vehicle onto skyline drive and do some hikes there. That might be slightly more expensive but more convenient due to the hookups and not having to tow a trailer through skyline drive so you could spend your time enjoying the views and not worrying about the trailer and straining the tow vehicle as it's a twisty and hilly (but spectacular) road.

This is a nice Va state park near skyline drive and right on the Shenandoah river.
