Close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, about 4 miles from milemarker 10 is Sherando lake cg. Loop A is most ly tents with no hookups, but sites 29,30 and 31 are great for small trailers. Loop B is electric only and does not take reservations. Loop C is electric only and all sites are reserved. Below is a campground map. The phone number to the gatehouse is 540-942-5965. They have photos of all the sites and can help you select one if you want to try to reserve one in Loop C. If you go for loop B, get there in the morning on Sunday through Thursday for your best chance.

Moving down the BRP, Highland Haven is the place to stay close to Floyd, VA around mm 150. Right on the BRP at mm 170 is Rocky Knob, one of the best places to camp, but no hookups just flush toilets, cool mountain air at 3,000 ft elevation and no crowds (except for Floydfest the first weekend in August)

I don't care for VA state parks but WV state parks are the best. Stay at Watoga state park right on the Greenbriar River. Electric only. We camped there 25 years ago and also again just last year. It has not changed one hair. That is a good thing. It is about 35 miles to Cass, but that is where I would stay. Close to Cass is also a huge telescope and another train ride in Durbin (I think). Just south of Watoga is Beartown state park. A nice walk through huge boulders on an elevated deck. It is always cool at Watoga and they even have a pool. PM me if you would like more info.

John,
We also recently camped at Loft Mountain, Big Meadows & Peaks of Otter--all great campgrounds but dry camping. The sites are very nice and easy walking to trails and the visitor centers. One advantage to being in the National Park campgrounds are the wonderful Ranger programs at Big Meadows and the proximity to several trails from all the campgrounds.

Loft

I was in Loft campground some ten years ago. Had a nice time, it was late Oct, only a few campers there (I was in a tent then) the wind blew so hard we took down the tarp and made it into a windblock for the tent and fire. The ranger program the next day was Raptors, and park ranger Jason was the speaker......seems like yesterday. Not that it is a must, but now that I have the trailer, I like having the electic hookup. But with a view like that....it's worht the sacrifice. MPJ

Our favorite campground is Endless Caverns RV Resort, located about four miles south of New Market, VA in the Shenandoah Valley. It's about 18 miles north of Harrisonburg. I have always loved this area since I was in college at JMU in Harrisonburg. We love the wooded, terraced campsites at Endless Caverns. Some of them back up to woods and streams, and the whole campground is built on the side of a mountain. There is access to the actual caverns there as well, and lots to do and see in the area. It's affiliated with Morgan RV Resorts.

I am planning on puling 30 AS entire distance of Blue Ridge parkway starting at Front Royal.
Is this possible or is terrain and tunnels restrictive to passage.

Nope, from what I read, the most restrictive tunnel is just south of the Thornton Gap entrance, and I just pulled our 30' through it a couple weeks ago with no problem. The road is curvy, but you're going slow anyway.

Have a good time. We loved it, and we will definitely be back. We stayed at Big Meadows.

This is at the overlook just south of that tunnel:

just finished the WBCCI Blue ridge caravan. did the entire parkway from cherokee to Waynesboro. Great drive. Do it. 25-34 footers and motor homes. No problems.

Misty Mountain Campground near Waynesboro is nice. In fact, I am sitting in it now typing this. And the airconditioner is running hard. First time the air has been on in three weeks and, in fact, it was chilly most nights on the parkway.

Cool breeze campground at Galax is nice and well located.

Oh yes. On the way in, my wife spotted a bear near the road. Pretty cool. The overlooks are pretty nice views, too.

We are going to Shenandoah in the next few days. Our path will be going west from Warrenton VA. Does anyone know anything about the Thornton Gap entrance and what we should be aware before hand? We are headed to Big Meadows CG. Sounds like a beautiful place from what I have read so for.

Great area - I don't have any specific RV parks to recommend, but if you are a US Civil War enthusiast as I am, you will find lots of historic places of interest to visit!

As well, Mt. Airy SC isn't too far away - home of Andy Griffith and model for "Mayberry" in the TV series - A fun place to visit! have a Pork Chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch while there!

We often stop at Mt Airey overnight if we are traveling home from Florida at Mayberry Campground. It is on a farm that was once the home of the original
"Siamese Twins!"

As well, nearby Galax Va. is a great center of Old Time music if you might happen to be a five string clawhammer banjo player as I am! (yes, I know, probably not!)

Brian. (another UK emigrant to Canada - but many, many years ago!)

Skyline Drive is a great place to camp, do not be in a hurry as the speed limit is 35 MPH plenty of wild life. Camping is good however no hook ups. I pull my 25 flying cloud with a Toyota Tacoma no problems.

Enjoy
