Campgrounds in the San Antonio - Austin - Fredericksburg Area

Barbara and I are planning a trip out to the area of Texas that is roughly in the San Antonio - Austin - Fredericksburg region. We will depart from our home (Milton, FL - near Pensacola) and work our way west, with one planned stop in Lousianna to visit friends.

We would greatly appreciate comments (good and bad) from those that have used campgrounds in this area. Private email would be fine, unless one feels that the information is of sufficient general interest to post.

I think you would like the State Park at Blanco. There are lots of great parks around Fredricksberg and Johnson City. Nice time to visit.

Pecan Grove RV Park on Barton Springs Road will put you right in the heart of Austin and within walking distance of downtown via the hike and bike trail on Lady Bird Lake and great restaurants (Chuy's!) within 3 minutes.

There are a lot of great state parks in the area. Garner State Park is really nice, it's West of San Antonio and SSW of Fredericksburg.

Blanco Settlement in Blanco, The Blanco Settlement - Cabins & RV Spaces in the Texas Hill Country (the latest version of True Grit is being filmed at the Blanco Courthouse there now), Canyon of the Eagles, Texas Hill Country Resorts, Lake Buchanan Family Vacations, Reunions-Canyon of the Eagles. Both are clean and have full hookups. Blanco Settlement is on the Blanco River and Canyon of the Eagles is on Lake Buchannan. We like Lady Bird Park in Fredericksburg, RV Park / Camping!

Have a great time in Texas!!

If you are near Kerrville, 60 miles Northwest of San Antonio, you may want to consider Kerrville-Schreiner City Park. This was a state park until a few years ago and has been really upgraded by the city. The sites are large with lots of woods with deer and other wildlife that are quite tame. This park has quite a few full hookup sites as well. We have camped there at least once a year for the past 18 years. The area is real bicycle friendly which is one of the reasons we like to go there. Kerrville is a nice town with about 25000 residents.

My Choice

We stayed at Kerrville-Schreiner City Park a couple of months ago on our way back up from Del Rio. (Garner SP was good to us too.), We put the Kerrville park on our "definitely will go back" list.

If you will be around for a while, be sure to buy the $60 state park card. It will save you $ in the long run.

Has anyone tried either of the Sun RV resorts in San Antonio: Blazing Star or Travellers World? Which is preferable? Thanks.
