In Durango, the closest CG to town is the United CG which is on the river and the train goes through the middle of it every morning and evening, 3 times a day in summer. Alpen Rose is a few miles north of there. Also KOA south of town.
Haviland Lake for more rustic Forest Service CG.

I think either one of those campgrounds would be a fine choice. We've stayed at the United a few years ago and it was very nice. The WBCCI caravan in the southwest meets at the Alpen Rose. I can't speak for it personally not having stayed there but I'm confident that the caravan leaders are pretty discriminating in their choices and it would be a fine option.
