Campground Recommendations

We are in NC and are thinking of going further south for the week between Christmas and New Years. I'm thinking of Edisto Beach in SC depending on the weather or going further even into Florida if necessary. I'm interested in recommendations for Florida northeast to central coast.

Edisto is great and you should be able to get in at this time of year. However it might not be as warm as Florida. Florida also has some great state parks. Good luck and have a safe trip!

anastasia state park in st augustine is really nice.

but finding an OPEN site is tricky, although cancellations happen and spots open up.

there are a dozen private parks long the north/east coast too, but they can run up to 100$ a nite.
______________

driving slightly west along the gulf coast are several nice florida state parks....

st joseph island
st george island
grayton beach
topsail hill preserve

and so on...
_______________

go to reserve america and click on florida, then look at the many parks listed for each region of the state.

most are nice and most have sites that will accommodate long trailers...

the 2nd weekend in jan there is a BIG air forums gathering at TOPSAIL, 40+ 'streamers....

it's a good park and a great time and not that far via i10 or 98/19...

and there are still sites available...

cheers

Fort Clinch State Park in Fl is the closest park in Fl. There are 2 sections. On the beach and in the woods. The beach area has open topped showers and can be a bit nippie in the winter but has more sun if the sun is out.

Fernandina Beach is a great little town. You are about 25 miles from Jacksonville.

NOw that said if the weather looks at all good go to Edisto. There is NOTHING there. That is why it is my favorite and the fossiling can be great if a storm has just come through. Then again the largest tooth I have ever found was at Ft. Clinch.

hold off heading south for a couple of weeks and join us at ocean lakes campground in myrtle beach. we have about ten or so rigs meeting up to ring in the new year. 12/27-1/2 is the loose schedule.

Edisto is a beautiful place, lots of shells to collect and dolphins to watch. The whole Low-Country area is worth a drive through on your way south. We especially like Beaufort, SC, which is very historic and where there is a nice state park and a very nice private campground right before the park entrance.

We have stayed at Hunting Island, SC, a beautiful state park right on the beach...Hilton Head, also Abbey Hanna City Park in Jacksonville, and Bryn Mawr in St. Augustine...all are great parks and we would go back to any of them. I guess it depends on how far south you want to travel. I don't think you would be disappointed in any of these campgrounds. Wish we were closer...right now we are snowbound! Enjoy!

Thanks for all the recommendations! I'm going to decide based on the weather at the last minute. Nice thing about having a condoluminum! It rolls where I want to take it. Thinking Edisto unless I need to go south for better weather. I've heard Anastasia mentioned as a great park previously.

Another great park is Crooked River SP in St Mary's, GA. This is just N of the GA/FL line. Day boat trips to Cumberland Island Natl Seashore run out of St Mary's. But remember one thing - getting in to any of these parks at this late date is likely going to be tough.

If you make it to Fort Clinch, be sure to look us up.

Look for the Airstream in the Volunteer Village, we're here through the end of December.

If you have a choice between Edisto and Hunting Island, definitely go with Hunting Island. It is a 5500 acre barrier island that is largely in its natural state. We were there a couple weeks ago and at this time of year you will have no trouble getting a site--within easy view of the ocean.
Beaufort is a beautiful coastal town and an interesting place to visit if you have the time.
Anastasia and all those parks in Florida are great but if you are going to stay in SC for a bit I think you will well enjoy Hunting Island.

Thanks. I just made reservations at Hunting Island although they are pretty full. The site is not near the ocean and I don't have sewer on the site.
