As far back as I can remember, trailer or perhaps camping trailer described what we now call travel trailer. To me a camper has always meant something that fits in a pickup truck bed. A self propelled camping vehicle is a motorhome. Now, camper seems to mean everything from a person who camps to whatever they chose to dwell in when they do camp.

Given all this I'm perplexed about how to answer the OP's question.

It's a camper.
The term travel trailer in my mind distiguishes it from a 5th wheel or motorhome or pop-up- some people my say "bumper pull", which is a misnomer to me- it's not actually towed on the bumper but on a frame mounted receiver under he bumper...

A closely related question: No matter what type of vehicle you are in, are you "camping" if you are in an RV park?

My answer: No.

Many of my former coworkers considered "camping" to be going to a permanent hunting camp or fishing camp where they lived in a fixed building with all the comforts of home except they had dormitory-style bedrooms. Compared to that, staying anywhere in an RV is considered "camping" to me.

Definitions are determined by usage as I understand. So, putting aside for a moment what "should" something mean, we can look at *what* it means for the time being.

Per Merriam Webster:

: a portable dwelling (as a specially equipped trailer or automotive vehicle) for use during casual travel and camping

As such, "camper" refers vastly (technically) to all RV's just about.

My friends often refer to my airstream as a "camper" or sometimes "travel trailer"...I think the ones that say "travel trailer" have more familiarity with RV's (conjecture on my part) as some struggle to call it anything "what do you call that a motorhome?".

My patients in my clinic, much older Veterans, often see my photos and say "wow, I love that camper"...many will say "travel trailer" as well.

Of course, the wonderful thing about it being an Airstream, is that I can simply call it "an Airstream" (although one can say that about any brand I suppose).

I should like to add tangentially that, because I go primitive camping (I camp under a tarp in a hammock these days with some buddies ever few months), I find calling my activities in the airstream "camping" highly semantically confusing and avoid it, even though as I recall the formal full length definition in MW allows it, it is I suspect relatively a minority usage. I do not however believe many people really see "camper" as having anchored to "camping" or "relatively more humble/small forms of travel trailers or trump camper" forms of RV's.

As such, I am pretty agnostic on the question of what *should* it be called...I do not believe either term is more or less clear or confusing. I think I find the term "travel trailer" more descriptive...we RV'ers know the difference between "travel trailer" and "5th wheel" and others....for some reason I kinda doubt "we" would conflate the term "camper" with say a "5th wheel"...but I bet if I polled a whole bunch of non-RV'ers, they would not see the distinctions we see.

I now may start calling it "camper trailer".

PS - I just cannot for some reason enjoy the term "glamping"..I want to, but I just cannot do it...I now say "going RV'ing" or some literal description "I am taking the airstream this weekend to the beach"....

In my past, when I heard someone say they were going camping, I envisioned the pile of sleeping tents, sleeping bags, perhaps a cooking tent if a big group and if really upmarket perhaps some folding chairs. When on site, everyone shared the shovel for doing personal business a discreet distance from the campfire.

Having an Airstream, perhaps we are going "remote housing" as we have all the appliances and comforts of a house....

The question of semantics or linguistics is first of all to many of us (I mean, I only can speak for myself) is independently enjoyable. There I said, it yeah, I like it, and I am proud

As to the term "RV", it is confusing to many people I meet. It seems to in almost every case so far conjure an image to the non-RV'er of a large class A motorhome...

What he said ^.
My wife calls it a "camper trailer".
Many people think RV means motorhome.
Camper, RV, trailer, travel trailer, camper trailer, Airstream, and RV are all synonymous and it may be called any and/or all at any time on any day.
Other than that, it has many names such as baked potato, silver bullet, my happy place, my cocoon...

Camper! Short local trips are into the Sawtooth Range, long trips (one of 6,500 miles last year) are to PA, then down to Florida, then back home....but its stays a "camper". Its a lot simpler to say "camper" than "travel trailer", at least for this immigrant. Safe travels in your whatevers. jon
