Camp Ground Flagstaff

We are taking Bubble 1 to Flagstaff in July for a horse show -- 3 Day eventing show -- at the fairgrounds. Does anyone know of a camp ground near the fairgrounds? I have been told we can camp at the fairgrounds but there are no showers and Bubble lacks this creature comfort and the rider -- wife -- wants this comfort .

Because its going to be HOT, we are looking to buy a shade shelter. I have been looking at them at REI and was wondering if anyone has a recommendation or opions?

Thanks

OkieHB

We have stayed at the KOA there a couple of times. It is quiet, shaded, and close to the Interstate.

There are three KOAs in Flagstaff:

Circle Pines KOA, Williams, AZ, immediately adjacent to I-40, west of Flagstaff -- Nice campground with easy access and pull-thru sites. Nice swimming pool and gift shop. Close to Grand Canyon Railway Station in Williams.

Flagstaff KOA, US-89 north of Flagstaff Mall (northeast side of town on highway to Page) -- Sites are in the trees, some are small and difficult to maneuver for large rigs (should be no problem for a 16-foot Airstream). In town, close to shopping, restaurants, etc.

Grand Canyon/Williams KOA, Hwy-64 (to Grand Canyon) 5-6 miles north of I-40, near Williams. -- We have not stayed here.

Note: We really like Bonito NFS Campground at the entrance to Sunset Crater Volcano National Park, located at the summit before leaving the Flagstaff area, where US-89 leaves the mountain and heads down into the desert towards Page and Lake Powell. Sites are spread out, paved and level, with lots of privacy, compared to commercial campgrounds. Also, it has fresh water available (spigots at restrooms) and flush toilets, but NO water, electric, or dump station. It is a very nice campground, but NO HOOKUPS.

Our favorite campground in the Flagstaff area is Pinegrove in the Coconino Naitonal Forest, about 15 miles SE of Flagstaff on Lake Mary Road. It's dry camping. It has nicely maintained, paved sites ... half the campgrond is reserveable, half is first-come-first-served ... both pull-through and back-in sites are available... there are bathrooms, pay showers, water available and a dump station.

We also like Bonito Campground at Sunset Crater National Monument mentioned above. It's a different experience because it's in a lava flow. Dry camping, water available, but there are no showers and no dump station.

We've also stayed at the Flagstaff KOA. It's convenient to town, etc, but we didn't enjoy it much ... crowded and our site was very difficult to get into, even for a 19'. We avoid it now.

We had a terrible experience at the KOA on 89. I would never stay there again. And recommend against staying in that KOA.

Have stayed at Woody's, nothing fancy but buried in the tall pines which means plenty of shade, a good requirement during summer months.

Found One

Thanks for all the suggestions

I have found two camp grounds -- Black Bart and Woody Mountain -- and have reserved a space at Woody. It is only 3 or so mlles from fairground grounds where we will be most of the time for the horse show. The reviews are fair to good and they have showers which is very important for the horse rider and the name is good.

Thanks and I will update everyone once we get there.
