Cajon Pass -- California

Can't tell from my maps...looking for experience......

If i take CA 138 out of Pearblossom to where it intersects I15 at or near the Cajon Pass ...are there any serious issues with this route...and on to San Bernardino and Riverside

thanks

I-15/Cajon Pass

The only issues that come to mind are that there are lots of trucks in the right two lanes, passing one another as you head uphill, and I always seem to hit that area when it's windy as hell!!! Once you get clear of Cajon Pass, there is just lotsa traffic.

I seem to remember 138 having a reputation for being very dangerous to drive, because of all the little dips and hummocks in the roadway that obscure vision for passing. After you get past that, I'd take the 15 freeway to the 215 to San Bernardino to the West, or the 210 to the North and East. Once you get there, you can take the 10/99 back to Riverside.

I think they have cleaned up 138 substantially in the past year or so. Going down the grade to San Bernardino you just have to be comfortable in one of the right two lanes while all of the lunatics play roller derby on the way down the hill.

down the road

well we were at lake casitas, a beautiful place east of ventura and i wanted an alternate route to avoid the interstate mismash of the LA area so dedided to go north and east to Santa Clarita via CA 14...great route towards Palmdale where the rich and famous live , i guess..

once there we took Ca18 east on the north side of the San Gabriel mountains to its intersection with I15 at the Cajon Pass..Ca a good road with a good flow of traffic, flat through the desert...all was well until we intersected I15 and then a sign notified us that road work was in progress and to expect 2 hour delays.......

they were resurfacing that part of I15 south...hell of a time merging onto the interstate, but alas it was only a thirty minute traffic jam and then we were on our way...destination SKP Jojoba hills east of temecula, calif......where we sit now in their boondock parking....about to commence exploring the area...

a trip to San Juan Capistraino.....
a trip back to the rim of the world drive
a trip to the Anza Borrego state park

all is well

138 is not a bad drive at all. Just remember to hookup your umbilical! We went from Palmdale to Rancho Cucamonga before I realized we had no trailer lights and brakes. Duh... This is why I like overkill on the tow vehicle.

You will be fine. It's kind of a old route 66 type of road where you see old towns and country settings in So. Cal. They have improved the road over the last couple of years. It did used to be dangerous with people trying to pass and driving too fast. Cajon pass is no big deal. I think 99% of my trips entail going up and down Cajon Pass.

"Windy as hell" as above means "could lose the rig". There are current local news articles about the winds this month.

See << Santa Ana Winds Topple Trees, Trucks >>

I grew up in the area and recommend paying attention to the weather forecast or wind warnings.

Lots of traffic. Typical SoCal stuff - everybody in an all-fired hurry to be - where? Sigh.
