CA Wine Country RV Parks & Campgrounds
We'd like to cruise over to Sonoma wine country (and on to the north California coast) after we visit Yosemite. Any recommendations for good RV parks and campgrounds?
Thanks,
Ken

We stayed at the KOA, San Francisco North/Petaluma. They offer a day trip by a Maxi Van to San Fran. It was great for us being our first time in SF. We got to see and do so much that we would have never done on our own. We paid for a winery tour (I'm talking late June) but saw no wine making, wrong time of the year. The $30.00 we paid I think was a rip. We did tour by our own vehicle to a few vinyards and enjoyed them. I don't remember the names.

Not sure if they will have any in your area but try Harvest Host....they have a thread here and a website too. I joined but have not tried anything as of yet.

We stayed at Spring Lake Regional Park in Sonoma County last summer and really enjoyed our time there. While there are no hookups, there are bathroom facilities, a wonderful trail around the lake, large sites, and beautiful scenery. It was convenient to wineries as well as to town for groceries, etc.

Take Hyway 41 West/South out of Yosemite to Paso Robles area. Great wine area, arguably better than up north...
There are a number of places to stay in the area, including along the coast which is approx. 1/2 hour drive from Paso.

Sonoma County Fair Grounds
Ken,
We have stayed at the Sonoma County Fair Grounds on several occasions. It is nothing more than a large gravel lot but then I see you are from Arizona so you are accustom to this type of park. It is conveniently located near everything. Russian River and Bodega Bay just to the West and North West. All the wineries are close by and of course Santa Rosa is a beautiful town and San Francisco is only 1 1/2 hour South. The RV park does close for a couple of weeks in the summer for the Fair so be sure to check ahead.

The best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay do not come from Napa or Sonoma, they come from Santa Cruz County, specifically Pleasant Valley. (See Alfaro Vineyards, Nicholson Vineyards, Storrs Winery). These wineries are only open on Saturdays, but the wine is mind blowing. Best of all, you avoid the traffic of Napa and get to enjoy the ocean. Make a reservation at New Brighton State Beach (try to get a Premium site on the bluff overlooking the ocean, sites 73, 75, 76, 78, 79, 82, 87).

In Calistoga is Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. No hook ups but just 5 minutes from Calistoga. I personally haven't stayed ther because I have family in Napa. But I've heard good things.
Bothe-Napa Valley SP
You know I love the grape, wish I could go too. I was in Paso Robles and Santa Ynez Valley in March, had serious sag in the rear of the Airstream with all the cases of wine I managed to bring home. Have fun you two!

I was going to suggest Bothe Napa. I called the park last week and got a call back from the ranger- phone tag, but there is someone there. The location can't be beat, Calistoga is a nice place to visit, and great wineries.

First recommendation is to try the Wineries in the Lodi -Stockton area. Not as crowded and the wine is about half the price.
Second Recommendation, Try camping at Lake Berryessa Near St Helena.
Third Recommendation: Henry Cowell redwoods State park in Scotts Valley CA near Sant Cruz if you wnat to do the Santa Cruz Wineries.
Fourth recommendation, Try the RV park on Monteray highway just north of Morgan Hill, CA. Morgan Hill - Gilroy area has several wineries and you can take a trip over the hill to Watsonville to pick lolliebberries at the Gizdich ranch.
