CA to AL for Thanksgiving

Hey Folks-
My wife and I have been on quite the Airstream journey as of late. We started out in AL reworking the 49 Trailwind making it roadworthy and let me tell you it towed like a dream. We have a Ford Escape 6cyl and it was no problem at all. We have limited ourselves to 6-8 hrs on the road daily and it worked out pretty good on the way out to the CA. It went like this (i am keeping it brief but you can check out blog for the complete rundown of where we ate camped etc): 1st day-AL to Little Rock, AR 2nd day-Little Rock to Amarillo TX 3rd day Amarillo to Flagstaff 4th day Grand Canyon to Bakersfield, CA 5th day to our destination Palo Alto, CA.
Now with that said we are marking out our return route and we want to take a slightly different route. We have some extra time and would like to spend a couple of extra days in AZ and NM. Can anyone here recommend some sweet places to camp in those states. We do need a hook-up and facilities cause our 49 didn't come with a toilet or shower. We are interested in corky dessert spots (neon sign with half the bulbs burned out kinda place) that have character instead of being sorrounded by half a million dollar rv's. We stayed at a few rv's camps like that and we felt really out of place. So yeah we are shoving off this saturday and would appreciate any recommendations you can throw our way.

If you take the Southern route through Arizona, I would suggest the Shady Dell in Bisbee. They have a small RV park area plus the vintage trailers they rent as hotel rooms. There will even be a few Airstreams spending the Thanksgiving weekend at the Dell. Lots to do and see in Southern Arizona and the weather is just perfect this time of year.

Welcome to the Shady Dell!

Kingman,Az is about as quirky as you are likely to find. Right in the heart of Route 66. Many RV parks, from nice to burnt out! And lots of desert sights. Cloride & Oatman,Az are nearby, old mining kinda ghost towns. Wiekiup,Az is 50 miles down hwy 93 on the way to Phoenix they have a small RV park that looks intriguing, but I have not stayed there. Good Luck, Arizona is the best of the 50 states!! Kingman is on interstate 40, about 70 miles from Needles,Ca. Adios, John

Just read your entire blog. What a great story! That little trailer is so happy to be out of the backyard and touring around with you guys. Dont be afraid to pull up and park next to some big motorcoach because you know they are inside there saying.." man thats actually a cute little trailer that has personality" unlike the big Moho..

Make sure to post more pics..

Vinnie
