Here's the long and short of it:
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publicati...-12-1-eng.html

I'd recommend you call the offfice of the CBSA where you will be Re-entering Canada and ask them what specific information they'll ask you for so you can be prepared when you arrive at the crossing.

Yeah, I think you'll want to declare it.....too big to smuggle across.

You may also have to drop off the trailer at US customs BEFORE getting to the border as they'll want to go over the unit before it leaves the US. So I'd get in touch with US customs as to what procedures they require as well.

Cheers
Tony

When I imported our 2011, the US side didn't care, didn't need to see it. When we imported a vehicle they did need paperwork.

This may only be a BC issue: Importing into BC, we needed to get an ICBC insurance waiver to have it covered once it entered Canada, and that was only good point to point. In that case, it is best to go through the border and directly to get it inspected (if possible) so you can get it covered. If you take it to storage first you'll have to get a second waiver to take it for inspection.

No, that is not necessary for a trailer, only for motor vehicles.
I just imported my 27 AS a couple of weeks ago.

When I bought and towed from Georgia to my home province, I had checked with Canada Customs. I was advised I needed to have papers from Airstream that there wasn't any recalls on my unit. I also had to contac RIV to got the necessary documents for my unit. (You will have a certain amount of time to complete their requirements and receive their decal). At the border, I presented the CBS with the completed paperwork, paid the required taxes and received a number that is put unto the RIV paperwork. All in all, I spent about a half hour at the border. The US border didn't even request me to stop. Good luck and enjoy the experience.

Unless you know you have clear title, you do need to stop at the US to get the title checked for any liens. Once in Canada you will probably need to pay the GST using a credit card at Canadian customs.
If there is a recall on the trailer you will need to wait for clearance papers once you are home, before you can register the unit in your name and have it checked for meeting Canadian regulations...have Friends waiting on this at this time. As noted by "macodpei" if everything is clear you have to contact RIV for documentation to take to a qualified inspection company...(we used Canadian Tire) who will complete the form and then it gets sent to RIV who eventually issue a clearance ..then you go to provincial registration, pay provincial taxes based on your valuation...you will need proof of what you paid, and get your licence

We imported our AS back into Canada in 2015. Just a few things to set up in advance.

1. Your appointment with the imported vehicle inspector. https://www.riv.ca/RIVInspection.aspx can locate the one nearest you. Maybe confirm your appointment a day or two in advance. Our guy forgot about our appointment, and took the day off. Fortunately we got it done the following day. The inspector has to stamp your vehicle import form saying your AS passed the inspection.

2. A meeting with your RV insurance agent, so that you're covered properly right away. Bring all of your official paperwork with you.

3. Calculate your duty on both the AS and on any post-factory work you had done in the dealer's shop, such as an upgrade. Sadly, this includes labour as well as parts. This is soooo expensive, but it also isn't worthwhile trying to creep through the border with anything not declared.

If your dealer is used to selling to Canadians, s/he will have advice on the process.

We did not stop at US customs.

Congrats on your new AS! Importing is a hassle, but it's only temporary.

I just checked the link I posted, and it looks like there are 3 Canadian Tire stores where someone can perform the imported vehicle inspection in Ottawa. Your insurance agent will want to see that he's signed off properly, also for licensing/registration purposes.

I called US customs. they Said "No motor; no need to stop. go directly to Canada costumes"

i called Canada customs, they said "no motor, no need for 72 hour pre-notice". just pull-up with all your documentation. IE 4 copies of form 1, bill of sale, recall free notice, proof of ownership and insurance

You can either pre-pay the $300 fee for form 1 on riv.ca or pay on the spot
&
$100 + tax if you AC in the unit
&
8% HST

then when you get the ONT plates, pay the remaining 5% tax
