Bryce Canyon to Dead Horse State Park (Moab)

I will be going from Bryce to Dead Horse this May pulling 23" International. My initial intention was to do State route 12 to 24 through Escalante, Boulder, Hanksville, then I-70 east, then south to Moab. My other option would be to head west out of Bryce then take Hwy 89 north and pick up I-70 east in Salina. I have travelled both these routes before, but not with trailer, and not recently. Opinions?

Did that exact route a few years ago. But without my trailer. Great ride and would not hesitate to make it with my 30'er. Spectacular scenery. Take your time and enjoy the ride.

Either way you have a nice ride. The interstate will give you more room to maneuver and less curves, but the back roads will have less safety but more scenery. Life is a bunch of trade-offs.

I've gone both ways as well while doing a loop of all the S. Utah parks. I'd take the route through Escalante, Boulder ect. I tow a 25' Airstream and had no problems. You have a few tight turns but nothing major. Awesome scenery.

Take scenic highway 12. It's beautiful and you will not have any trouble with your 23 footer. You might want to consider a stop at the Shooting Star Drive-In, an Airstream park/resort in Escalante. They are opening in May.

I forgot about that place. I'm coming back that way in early June from a trip down Rt 66 and was still trying to decide what to do. I e-mailed the owner at the site. I think we may want to stay there a few days.

Thanks:
Charlie

We approached Bryce on that exact route from Green River through Hanksville, Boulder & Escalante last May. The drive was as much a highlight as any of the Nat'l Parks -- stunning & absolutely gorgeous. You'll be talking about the road just south of Boulder for a long time. It runs atop a knife ridge some hundreds of feet above slickrock views out both sides -- early training for Dead Horse. There are some wide pullouts to enjoy the view. There won't be much for fueling stops northeast of Torrey/Capitol Reef until you get to Green River. Enjoy the drive!
