This is the sad history of a very good aircraft that war and history killed.THE BOEING 307. A short history:The boeing 307 stratoliner was the world's first high-altitude commercial transport and the first 4 engine airliner in scheduled domestic service. It's first flight was Dec 31,1938 and it originated from the B-17 bomer. Its pressurized cabin allowed the airplane to fly above the rough weather at 20,000 feet.It round fuselage provided maximum space for a crew of 5 and 33 passengers. The 12 foot wide cabin had space for berths for overnight travlers.Boeing only built 10 of them, production stopped at the start of would war II.
(1) S/N 1994 the proto type crashed March 18th 1939 killing 10, Boeings chief engineer and KLMs Test pilot where killed.

(4) S/N 1997.This was Howard Hughes aircraft he owend TWA ( Then knowen as Transcontinental and Western Airlines)It was wrecked by huricane Cleo in 1962 and was made into a very nice house boat.
(5) S/N 1998 Mystery ending. On 13th Mar 1975 the aircraft was reported missing on a flight from Hong Kong to Vientian Laos. Some report say that it made a forced landig in a river and that Capt Jimmy Lieu and the co-pilot were held prisoner by the Pathet Lao.Other say they have seen the same aircraft in the Mekong river near the Laos Thailand border in 1986.
(6) S/N 1999 Crashed in Battambang Cambodia 17 Jun 1974.Killed19 of 39 on board.

I have enjoyed your photos and information about aircraft. My wife's uncle Bob Spellman was the youngest captain of a B-17 at one point in WWII and died while flying the "hump" between bombing missions. He had been selected to fly B-29s and was excited about the prospect.
My wife Bobbi (the bob half of Jimbob79) was named after him and everyone has always called her Bob, I think in honor of her uncle. Signing-off at the end of a call from her with "I love you Bob," while in a group of people who don't know her, has caused people to look at me with looks of surprise.
There is an air museum, The War Eagles Air Museum, in Santa Teresa, NM, outside El Paso, Texas, that I think you might enjoy if you are in this area. It has one of the few two-place P51 Mustangs, and a mig-21that was donated by the German Air Force. War Eagles Air Museum
Hi. I'm glad you decided to keep posting. We made it to Port Townsend yesterday. It was a good trip and we are really glad to be home. Let Minn know we are o k. Miss you. Mike and Tracy too......Mike amd Sheri
Well I guess now I can say that I have been boondocking for years now and love it.
I still see lots of Airstreamers and SOBs that still think if they do not have full hook-up's that they can not survive a camping week end.I feel that ALL folks that have RV's should know how to boondock so when the BIG one comes or our governmement goes south on use or some one just shuts down the power grid (THINK about what that will do.)NO power to pump gas,NO power to run your refrgerator and freezer,NO power to run check out scanners at the store,NO power to run your microwave,NO pouer to run your heating and AC,NO power for your TV,NO power to run your tooth brush,NO power to run your lights,NO power to run ATM's,NO power to pump water to your home,NO power to run the cell phone systems,NO power to run your computer or the internet,NO one directly killed.Just a lot of folks sitting around waitin for the governmemt to come save them.SO boondocking will become a must to get by for at least a few WEEKs even if its in your own drive way.Keep your gas tank full.your propane tanks full, your fresh water tank full, money and gold in your pocket and your guns close at hand and you should be OK.DO NOT think that ya'll hear "I am from the governmemt and I am here to help".If you need a helping hand yall have to depend on the one on the end of your arm.
So practice boondocking you may find like lots of other folks that you like it better than a campground with hook ups and that you can survive.
(Photo 1) Boondocking under a pepper tree right now in CA(Note extra propane tanks, gas and my bike to pull my Airstream.)
(Photo 2) Boondocking in the pine trees of AZ in the past.
(Photo 3) Boondocking in the AZ desert in the past. I HAVE BEEN UP THE RIVER AND OVER THE MOUNTEN and I remember all the time that I have it better boondocking in my trailer today than my kin kolks had when they came west in the 1850s to places like Yreka CA and Paradise Valley NV in wagons and had cabins that where not near as nice as my Squarestream.

From days long gone when I was in the U.S Air Force fighting the "COLD WAR" as a Crew Cheif on B-47 bomber with the 441st Bomb,Squadern,320th Bombardment Wing at March AFB CA and the 339th Bomb Squadron,96th Bombardment Wing at Altus OK.
Back in that time if you wanted to be the best you where in SAC(Strategic Air Command)
B-47 was the country's first swept wing multi engine bomber. It represented a milestone in aviation history and a revolution in aircraft design.Every large jet aircraft today is a descendant of the B-47.
Because early jet engines could not provide enough thrust for takeoff B-47s had small rocket units mounted on them on the fuselage for jet assisted takeoff (JATO)
Once airborne, the graceful jet broke speed and distance records.
The B-47 had a short sevice live in my 4 years of active duty,When I got out as a S/SGT I had seen my Squaderns go from B-29s to B-47s to B-52s.

Do any of you remember when flying was first class fun. When you could go to the gate to meet or see your folks off on a REAL flight?Like going some place in your Airstream all first class.
When folks dressed up to go.NO TSA NO long lines.NO being loaded like cattle in a truck on the way to slotter pens..Just a good adventure.
This is from my days working for America Airlines as a mechanic in late 1950s and early 1960s.
I started in 1957 as a JR Mechanic for $2.13 per hour.I worked lots of over time and made $10,000 my first year and was in tall cotten.

Saw your post on the air travel. I hate flying anymore. Last time I did I realized i was in the wrong century. I did wear a three piece suit as It was not a pleasure trip, and children hid behind their mothers--maybe they thought i was an FBI agent or a lawyer... it couldnt have been my look of extreme anger on my face at being molested by TSA....
I fondly remember as a little kid going to the Airport (BTM) which was a Swiss Chalet style with a deck that led to the field... before all the security, and one elderly retired cop for the security and waiting for my dad to come home, which was always in a suit and tie. (He worked for the Anaconda Company, later part of ARCO). Service I remember was Western and Northwest. You could always tell a Western Pilot because he didnt circle trying to figure out how to land. Delta and Northwest alwasy did. I liked to fly as a kid and eat with real silverware. Even in Europe with a nice bottle of wine with something dead in jelly KLM could put on a good feed even on a short Amsterdam to Stuttgart hop.
The last time I was on the Tarmac i was hauling "bodies" out of a C130 as part of a terrorist exercise. Lemme tell you a backboard is no substitute for a WWII stretcher, and TSA only got in the way. I never got to use a C130 in the wild, I remember a P-3 and a couple of P2V Neptunes, and what is worse not one of my pictures of those pulling out over my head after a bomb run ever turned out. Kind of hard to take pics and tell air attack if the retardant is hitting the target at the same time.
How much does your C130 carry now? The P2V's did 2000 gallons, I cant remember what the PB4Ys carried, and i remember(about 10 years ago) an ancient piston powered DC4 (I think) That had about 3000 gallons (may be wrong on that) that flew with the windows opened out of Grangeville Idaho taht you could hear about 20 minutes before it was ready to make its run.
One of the best days I had was sitting on a mountain monitoring a fire watching the bombers (I refuse to call them Tankers unless im talking to them) flying a racetrack pattern out of Missoula to Monture Creek at about 5 minute intervals. I could hear Airguard on my handheld and watched C130s, that DC? and the P2Vs do that all day starting at 0900 and ending just before dusk. THey saved my butt more than once also.
Thanks for keeping the heavies flying - we dont have near enough of them. A SEAT just dont cut it....
