We found them. Jim is the host at Mogollon campground which is just a bit past the wood canyon lake turn off. They are doing well and as always, Jim and Min's hospitality is second to none.

So it turns out that this area defines "high use" We rolled in at 11:30PM and all the campgrounds at wood canyon lake were full. Mogollon was full. So we started driving up the dirt road towards Winslow. We drove maybe a mile and found the 9350 campground mentioned in this thread. I jogged down the 9350 road and found an open spot. We pulled in across from a couple setting up at tent at midnight. We got set up and somebody pulled in next door after us. By noon the next day 9350 was full also. Reservations are probably a good idea in this area unless you want to head up Thursday or earlier in a week.

We ended up sharing our campground with some folks from Phoenix who then had some friends and then more showed up. It was quite a party by Saturday and they all had younger kids as well so it worked out just fine. The views are amazing, the rim is right there. I fished a few days but the lake would remind you of a cartoon since there are people about every 10 feet at least around half the lake. I did not see anybody catching anything. I caught 1 early in the morning about 5in long and threw it back. Drive back to Payson and get the all you can eat fish dinner, far less hassle.

Weather was great, a little warm in the afternoons but considering it was 110 in Phoenix, it was 78 when we left at the top.

All in all, a very nice trip. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Glad you had a nice time despite the busy campgrounds, Eric...it does get busy up there on the weekend! (Imagine what it will be like on 4th of July weekend!) Sounds like it was an adventure for you! You hit the nail on the head about Jim & Min's hospitality...they're the best... We hope to get back up to that end of the Rim sometime this summer...but hopefully we'll be able to take your advice and leave mid-week to avoid the rush.

Wish Jimmini could start posting more on his(this) site...could some of you visitors copy and paste their observations...???...wish we could be there for first-hand communication.
Will be spending the 4th up here with Steve&Reg and Howard&Carolyn as neighbors.

Jim & Min Visit

We went camping last weekend at Mogollon Campground on the Mogollon Rim this weekend where Jim & Min are campground hosts for the summer. They are off of the grid up there with no internet connection and limited cell phone reception. It was a nice break from the heat in Phoenix. It poured rain all weekend and we were in the clouds most of the time. Temps were in the 50s and 60s, hard to believe it is August in Arizona. It was a good time and as always Min kept us well fed.

The weekend was not without entertainment for sure. There were two guys in a brand new rented sob moho that decided to drive into town (no toad) and took off from their site with the awning still deployed. We heard this horrendous crash as they hit another SOB and speared the awning tube right through the back of the other trailer. It went inside at least 4 feet before they got it stopped leaving a nice round hole about 6" in diameter all the way through the other trailer.

Here are a few photos of our visit.

4. Even the dogs were bundled up

I did not want to rub salt into their wounds by running over there with my camera to shoot their unfortunate mishap. Believe me I wanted to, but just thought it may have been in poor taste.

Looks beautiful. We haven't camped in that part of the Rim. We've gotta make it up there sometime.

It's that time again. Several of us are at the Mogollon Campground near Woods Canyon Lake just east of Payson, AZ. We have 4 Airstreams on site and one more will be joining us tonight. The weather is fantastic!

Pictures when we get a faster connection...

Richard,
We will probably stop by for a visit on Sunday. We're at Show Low Lake for the long weekend (Ponderosa Shadows). And if you're over in our neighborhood, we will share our WFi.

That's what long lenses are for.

Back from the Rim and boondocking with Jimmini... We had been on a trip up north, Pinegrove Campground near Flagstaff for 3 nights, then Rock Crossing NE of Clints Well for 5 nights...then swung down to the Rim to Sinkhole to meet friends from Tucson for the holiday weekend... Unfortunately our friends had to bail at the last minute, so we ended up staying at Sinkhole by ourselves, and driving back & forth to Mogollon Campground (only about 5 miles) where Jim & Min are hosting... We enjoyed seeing Jim & Min (thanks for your excellent hospitality), Richard & Jan, Julianne, and Eric & Renee...it was a blast...sorry we missed you, Ken & Linda, but we decided to come home Sunday rather than fight the traffic on Monday...tanks to you all...we had a great time! Home now safe and sound and the Bambi washed for the next trip...the truck gets a much-needed bath today.
