Did you know that the Tonto Basin was formed millions of years ago when the mountains around it rose and the land below sank to make the Tono Basin.Over the centuries the Tono Creek and Salt River cut the Salt River Canyon.( Now damed to make Roosevelt Lake)
The Tonto Basin has a lot of western history.Like on the 28th Dec 1872 about 130 solders found over 100 Yavapais indians as they where comming from a cave deep in the Salt River Canyon. The trapped indians refused to surrender so in the end about 75 indians died and the rest captured at what is now known as the BATTLE OF SKELETON CAVE.
Another part of western history here was the PLEASANT VALLEY WAR.(Also known as the Tonto Basin war) This was cattlemen fighting sheepmen. It lasted over a decade but the most heated part was between 1886 and 1887.It took the lives of 15 cattlemen and 3 sheepmen.

We ARE headed in your general direction, soon...waiting for a replacement contact lens...then a leisurely stroll out IH 10, stopping here and there...don't know the exact itinerary, but, then, never have...save a sunset or two for us.

A little info on Roosevelt Lake recreation area.
(1)The lake campgrounds are at about 2200 feet so it is cool in the Winter and HOT in the summer 100F +. Best time early spring and late fall. This is a good place to be when Quartzsite start to get warm and it is still to cold up on the rim or White mountains.
(2)There are 4 main campgrounds from the west they are Indian Point 51 sites. You ford Tonto creek to get to it and this can not be done when the creek is up.There are no shades or tables there.Cell phone service.
Then there is Cholla campground 182 sites with shades and tables.Modern baths and showers.I think the best sites here are 18,19,51 86 ,87 and 176.Cell phone service.
Next is Wind Hill campground with 339 sites. Here I think the one up on the hill side are best some have nice views of the lake and are farther apart. This campground also has modern baths and showers.Spotty cell phone service here.
The last one is Schoolhouse campground 156 sites.Modern bath and shouwers.NO Cell phone service here.
(3) Unlike most campgrounds the Roosevelt Lake recreation area uses a daily pass system. If you are using any of the Boat ramps, campgrounds, picnic sites or parking lots you have to have a daily pass. The Tonto National monument does not require one, it has it own fees. You can buy them at the Visitor center/ ranger stations and some of the stores in Tono Basin. They are $6.00 per 24 hours and $ 4.00 for each 24 hours for each watercraft. They are 1/2 price if you have Golden Age type cards. You can buy as many at one time as you like. They are like a scratch lottery ticket you validate them by scratching the time, year, month and day off put them in your front window and they are good for 24 hours from that time.
(4) Quiet time is 10:00PM to 6:00 AM.Generators may be run from 6:00AM till 10:00 PM.EXCEPT from 1 Jun thru 31 Aug when generators maybe run 24 hours a day.Coati loop at Windy Hill campground generators maybe run 24 hours a day all year.
There is a good grocery store at Tonto Basin with gas, butcher shop, deli and Bank in it.Plus other shops in that small comunity.
There is Wall Mart and Safeway store at Globe right at US 60 and AZ 188.

Ps

PS
There are water taps in all the campgrounds BUT NONE that you can connect a hose to.
Same goes for the only bump station that is across from Cholla campground the hoses on the street side will not reach your curb side black tank clean out and you can not connect a hose to them.NO drinking water at dump station.
