Somewhat random trip.

Hi, we left Redding RV Park in Redding, California this morning. The roads were nice and the traffic wasn't too bad. Usually it's back and forth with the big rigs on the hills, they pass me going down hill and I pass them going up hill. Due to lane closures and empty trucks, there was very little passing by anyone.

It's rather scenic along here and there's a view point for Mount Shasta. Usually the view point is quite full, but today we were the only ones there. I guess no-one else appreciates the view of the naked mountains. We took a little break, a few pictures, and hit the road. There is another rest stop past Mount Shasta at an airport. Due to our age and conditions, we are stopping more often.

Our next planned stop is at the new rest stop in Siskiyou, Oregon. We found this place shortly after it first opened. Very nice buildings, you can get coffee and travel information inside. It's nice to just go in and look around. We were hesitant to stop there because we read that the homeless were taking over the place. On the street side of the buildings is RV parking, and you can spend the night there too. On the other side of the buildings, is parking for cars. This rest stop does not allow trucks / big rigs. Well, we were the only RV'ers there and no homeless insight.

It's way too early to spend the night at this rest stop so we were thinking about staying at Seven Feathers Casino for the night. Last time that we stayed there it was quite costly. To get the price down to where it should be, you need to go to the Casino and get a card marked. They have a free shuttle bus that will take you there. We don't gamble or drink, and it's too hard for us to get past the smokers to get to the , just OK, buffet. Seven Feathers also has a free RV lot if you like. While we are here, the best deal is the Indian gas station which was only $3.65 per gallon due to no taxes. We got a tank of gas at this very busy gas station then took a little break. I told Lee that i didn't want to stay here and we are close enough to home, so we went home.

Wholly with you on the limits of age creeping up on us—for me, crept. Our new house now has all appliances, shades that insulate well, cabinets for laundry room and garage—slowly, ever so slowly moving along, bringing our many books, book cases, lots of manageable stuff for a pickup, and making some changes. We all know moving is awful, but we do it anyway.

Glad to see you made the trip and wish we could be on the road somewhere far away. I guess those days are over, but maybe, just maybe, there will be some sort of trip some day....

Somewhat random trip.

Hi, it's pretty obvious that we won't be using our trailer anymore this year. So we unloaded most of it and I winterized it. Cold weather is coming and I dont want any water damage. As always it is a tight fit backing my trailer onto the RV pad, But I got it in there with no damage to the trailer, garage, or gate. Painting white lines on the RV pad and having a back up camera makes parking my trailer easier.

What I think I will do next is to rate my setup using "A" through "F" and explain how I decided on who got what.

2014 Ford F-150. I gave the truck a "B"

Hi, My truck as usual did a good job towing our trailer on this trip. During this trip, my truck hit 60,000 miles. Things that I didn't like about my truck in-which some of them are normal or not the truck's fault.

(1.) Poor gas mileage while going south. All mountains and mostly up hill.

(2.) Poor gas mileage on the way back home. Lucky us, we had a strong head wind.

(3.) Not enough engine braking; I knew this before we bought this truck, but more power was the trade off.

(4.) Under light braking, I don't feel the trailer brakes helping unless I press a bit harder on the brake pedal. So I manually help by using the trailer brake controller. I think the brake controller should work with a light pedal especially going down hill.

(5.) Two times, at the bottom of a long steep hill, my front brakes chattered. They got hot, but not that hot. I don't drag my brakes, I apply them to keep my down hill speed under 65 MPH. [65 to 55 Etc.]

I guessed that my brake pads were cracked and I was right. When I change my brakes I switch to Raybestos Ceramic pads. Because of the change, I do all four whether they need it or not. As you can see the front pads were all cracked. No blueing or hot spots on the rotors, so they couldn't have been that hot. The rear brakes were still good, but as I explained, I changed them too.

2005 Airstream Safari. I gave the Airstream a "B"

Hi, on this trip my trailer towed fine. No real problems. Nothing broke or fell apart. But I had two things to fix when we got home. I added a shower thermometer like I have in my house. When showering I got a comfortable 99 or 100 degrees, which is great for me. Only problem was, that as I moved the shower handle, the water temperature didn't change. This means that I will have to change the Moen Cartridge. I changed it once many years ago and it was difficult then, so it's going to be a problem now. First thing is because of the way Airstream installed my Moen shower control, I have to completely remove it to remove to cartridge clip. The plastic removal tool won't work either. I used Vise Grips and a hammer to get it out. They make a steel puller tool, but for a once or twice in alife time job, I'm not buying one.

Next problem; There are three screws through a bracket to the ceiling for my Little coat closet in the bedroom. They keep coming loose. This is a bad design. My fix, at this time, was to remove all three screws, stick tiny Zip Ties into the screw holes and re-install the screws. Will it hold this time? I don't know. I guess we will find out next year.

Equal-i-zer Hitch. I gave this hitch an "A-"

Hi, My hitch has worked very well for us for 19 years and all original parts. No swaying ever. On this trip of about 2,500 miles, I never had to re-grease it and it never made any noise. The only reason for the "A minus" is because it has a tight spot on the right side spring bar socket. I will have to take it apart for cleaning and re-greasing, but I will have to do some sanding, filing, or grinding. I have done this once before. It gets a burr or a rough spot on the inside of the hitch head.

Garmin RV 760 GPS. I gave my Garmin a "B"

Hi My Garmin RV 760 GPS with back up camera has been a life saver. It helps me find places, helps me get there, and lets me see behind my trailer for parking and for passing. It has some really nice features, she has a few problems. She sometimes doesn't understand voice commands. She got us close but couldn't find the entrance to the Marine base. And at one camp ground as we were right at the entrance, she said that I had to go .2 miles farther. If I listened to her I would have to turn around and that would have been a hassle. Also while in RV mode she wanted me to drive in the Fas-Trak lane, which I have set in avoidances.

Yamaha 2400 generator system. I gave this an "A+"

Hi, I went through a lot of work making my truck bed mounted generator system with my own version of a generator inlet with a jumper cord bypass so as to not need an electronic transfer switch. And it works great. Always ready if and when I need it. One part of my system is a 15' 30 Amp RV cord to connect my bed mounted generator to my trailer's front generator inlet. This also allows me to run my generator to power my trailer while driving.

However, on this trip we never needed to fire up the generator, but when our trailer was close to the power box, it was convenient to use the short shore power cord rather than un-winding and re-winding a 30' cord. So since this made things even better than expected, I gave my generator system an "A Plus".

Hi, Gene. Our plan for 2023 was to get the trailer out as much as possible even if it meant short Oregon coastline trips. But life got in the way. Because of that, there might not have been any trips at all. Then all of a sudden there was a family event that we should try to attend. Now that this long trip worked out for us, we know that we can still do it. Lee already told me that for 2024 she wants several trailer trips. I hope we can do it.

I don't know how you do it. We lived in an apartment, moved to a duplex, and bought our first house. We stayed in our first house for 33 years. Now we are in our second and last house. I hate moving.

Anyone who likes moving should get an immediate psychological exam. I may have a lingering symptom of Covid—exhaustion. Then our Subaru blew an engine last week and the company doesn't want to pay for it (maybe as much as $12K). New leaders at Subaru are not interested in the company's reputation. This is the second Subaru engine that has failed (1st: bad casting leading to hole in cylinder wall; 2nd: probably bad rod or main bearing). We sure didn't need that on top of moving. Subaru used to have a reputation for reliability. Getting the new house ready is expensive too, so I need a nap. We move every 11 years it seems—we also need a psychological exam.

I'm glad to hear Lee made it through. With almost 40 years of back issues, I certainly understand how she feels. Like you, we love to travel and we haven't been able to do much for years now.

You have reminded me to check the Tundra brakes. I really need to do brakes right now because I don't have enough to do.

Hi Bob,

Just wanted to let you know I followed your trip, enjoyed it, but without all the blood sweat and tears on being there in person. Thanks so much for taking us along. I also wanted you to know I’ve always appreciated the detailed narrative and photos you share. Hope you and Lee are able to make all those trips in 2024. I also hope I’m still here to follow along.

Regards,

Carol

Hi, Carol. Thank you for tagging along. I always like to tell it like it is: the good, the bad, and the ugly. And a little humor too. We hope 2024 will be good to all of us.

Bob and Gene — a thought from another guy who has become aware of the limits of age creeping up: as long as you are going on shorter trips in terms of time and distance, why not consider a shorter trailer?

We downsized (all the way to 16’) a few years ago and have found that the smaller trailer is way easier in terms of packing, hooking up, driving, and parking. We kept our full size tow vehicle so there is no need for weight distribution or sway control — just drop it on the ball. It’s so much shorter we rarely feel the need for the stabilizers.

We still go to all the same places and still enjoy all the benefits they offer, plus we still get all of the generic benefits of getting out on the road.

Hi, field & stream. We thought about getting a van for camping. First thought is that it would be easier to use; Just get in and go.

Some reasons that we haven't done it yet:

(1.) Cost. We can afford it, but do I want to spend that much and only use it for a few years? [time left unknown]

(2.) I will only consider a van that is a Ford Transit, no other brand, and no diesels.

(3.) A van, in Oregon, will still have to be winterized.

(4.) Wet bath???? I think we could handle or get used to one.

(5.) Size; we are definately spoiled with the size and layout / floor plan of our trailer especially after my livingroom remodel.

(6.) Wife says we have to sell our trailer first, and maybe my truck. I find it hard to sell my trailer when we haven't found anything that we like yet. Although some of the vans [conversions] are getting better. We look inside of them and say "What were they thinking??????" For example: The beds are too small or very awkward. Four seats for two people? What a waste of space.

(7.) I would build my own interior if I was rapidly approaching 39 years old. [for the second time]

Hi Bob — interesting thoughts, and we have had similar ones over the years. For background, I too am 78 and after camping in (VW) vans for 40 years we bought our first trailer (23’ Airstream) ten years ago. For us, unlike the bigger trailer, the 16’ is just as “get in and go” as the vans were. Plus, while camped it is far easier to day trip in the tow vehicle than having to get the van ready to go every time.

I’ll share our thinking on your points in order, recognizing that it is just our opinions of what works for us:

1) regarding cost, we couldn’t agree more. The initial price of vans is insane, maintenance is crazy, and the depreciation is nuts! If you sell your current Airstream and buy a smaller one of similar vintage it may cost nothing now, and you can probably sell it with little or no depreciation.

2) not applicable if you get a smaller trailer

3) true

4) wet baths are a very personal decision. For us it is no problem: we either shower at the campground, take a navy shower in the trailer, or do without.

5) I appreciate the benefits of larger, but if larger keeps you from getting out then it all becomes negative.

6) these issues go away with the smaller trailer approach. Plus, you get to keep your truck!

7) sad but true……..

I know that none of this might make sense for you, but it has made a big difference for us. We find traveling in the small trailer at 78 to be easier than traveling in the larger one at 68.
