Blue Ridge Parkway!

We're thinking of taking a trip up the Parkway, any campground suggestions? We've not been up there camping before.

I didn't camp there although I rode it three times. No help there. I was just wondering if an RV would fit through the tunnels?

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

We drove most of the Parkway from south to north in April. The two campgrounds that I would have liked to have stayed longer at were Smokemont campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the south end of the Parkway, and New River State Park in North Carolina. The campground inside Shenandoah National Park was not open for the season yet.

I've been along quite a bit of it with my trailer but not camping. It was too early in the season and their campgrounds were not open yet. We found a private CG just off of Rt 81 to stay. We didn't pass through any tunnels but I don't think there are any restrictions so I think RV's are OK. The section we traveled was in good condition and no problem with our rig.

Enjoy, it's a beautiful ride.

Virginia Highland Haven - Airstream ONLY

Beautiful - near wineries. Go to the Chateau Morrisette with your Airstream. Sample the wine. Sleep it off. Check into the campground.

We took a couple of bottles of that Black Dog wine back to Highland Haven. Sat outside and enjoyed watching the sun go down. We are headed back in a few weeks!

This is the lowest tunnel.

Bunches Bald Tunnel, Milepost 459.3, Maximum Height 13 feet 4 inches (4.1 m), Minimum Height 10 feet 6 inches (3.2 m)

Looks fine. They're taller than I remembered.

We've travelled the length of the Parkway and the Skyline Drive with our rig. No worries about tunnels, whether you're in VA or NC.

Some of the campgrounds on the parkway are kinda small, but I've always found a spot for my 31-footer.

Because the parkway rides ridges, mostly, you'll get a workout but just don't plan for long days and you'll be fine. Have a wonderful journey.

Enjoy the ride

The Parkway is my most favorite place on the planet. We are about 100 miles from the nearest access .Parkway campgrounds are a bit tight, and there are no hook ups. There are plenty of places to stay off the PW, including some SP, if you need a hook up. The Park service has a wonderful fold out map that shows all the mile posts, pull outs and facilities. Suggest you get one soon as you see a ranger or pull in to one of the Outposts. It makes the planning part easier.

Spent my college years at Appalachian State U in Boone, NC. Perhaps less time on the Parkway and more time in the classroom ...... Nope, parkway much more fun.

Have a great time.
