Blue Ridge Parkway

We are planning a 2 week trip along the parkway in late May/early June. Any suggestions for campgrounds along the parkway or just off the parkway. Also, any to avoid??? We're towing a 25ft camper. Will be travelling from the Southern end heading North. Any recommendations on things to do and see will be appreciated.

We went a couple of years ago with a smaller trailer, and I will tell you the traveling will be slow because of grades and curves, but the scenery is worth it. We did not actually camp on the parkway, but I would suggest you spend a day and tour the Builtmore Estate/Castle in Asheville if you have not been there.

Stay at Mama Gerties in Swanannoa east of Asheville. Very quiet beautiful campground. Very accommodating hosts. Junktique/antique at the tobacco barn on the edge of Biltmore Village. You could spend the entire day there if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Highland Haven Airstream Park just off the parkway near Copper Hill, VA will be a must for you. PM me and I'll give you more information if you like. I guarantee you'll love it and the folks that camp there. Mountain top scenery, hiking trails, waterfall, wildlife and gorgeous sunsets.

I wish I camped in the park.

I drove the whole thing and there were some nice spots to camp near
the ranger's station, I can't remember the individual "area" names. I was near the very top of the park.
However I think knowing you can do a portion of the park stop rest and drive around with just your tow vehicle. I think that would be enjoyable, I would to that if I the chance to go again.

The parkway is very well cared for and clean as of April 08.

We camp at the Rocky Knob CG (MP 168) and Otter Creek CG (MP 60) when travelling the BRP in Virginia. Peaks of Otter CG is also a good place to stop.Make sure to stop at the Mabry Mill on your way. (See below).

I've been there three times and the scenery is certainly outstanding; however, the FOG is also outstanding. We only got to see the scenery once, the last two time (in early June) we felt as if we barely excaped death by the time we were able to get off the mountains. Ask the ranger before you go up. If they tell you it "may" be a bit foggy, think twice before you try to pull a trailer up there. Otherwise that's a beautiful part of these United States and I personally would like to return.

Thanks for all of the great info. That's exactly what I was looking for. Do you know if reservations are necessary for the campgrounds on the parkway??? We will be there the last week of May/ first week of June. Just wondering how crowded it will be at that time. Thanks . Tina

The BRP is closed at Craggy Gardens so you'll have to get off anyway to detour from Swannanoa to just past Old Fort/Marion, NC. There are signs for the detour.

Mama Gerties, or the Asheville West KOA between Swannanoa and Black Mountain are both good choices. If you hit the Asheville area on a week day make sure you you visit 12 Bones for some fantastic barbeque. I'm partial to the Blueberry Chipotle Ribs with sides of Jalapeno Chesse Grits and Corn Pudding. Their only open for lunch, and crowded, but oh so worth it.

www.12bones.com

The Okie Dokie Smokehouse on Hwy. 70 in Swannanoa is good too.

Kevin
