Black Flies in New York

I know black flies are a real problem in upstate New York. I've heard that they're an issue in May & June Since we had such a warm winter will they be gone sooner?

Black flys are usually gone after the trees fully bud out and the ambient temperature rises which should be the case by mid-June, maybe earlier, given the weather pattern this Spring. However, you may discover it is a bonus year for mosquitos. The worst times for the skeeters should be from about 5:30am until 7am and then again from about 8:30pm until 10pm. If you are in a shaded woody area (or near wetlands, marshes, or low lying land) they could be a nuisance all day long.

Black flies are not an issue- -they are a problem, a pest and something to live with or avoid. More so in the Adirondacks than elsewhere. They are usually gone after the first hot summer day, and that will be the 4th of July. Fall and winter start soon afterwards and that is another good time to visit.
Check your tire pressure, insect repellent and enjoy.

Been going to the Adirondacks for a long time, we've never let them ruin a camping trip. DW grew up there so you learn to deal with it.
PITA but thats about it.

Rookies do tend to avoid May/June.

I love the Adirondacks and that's why I'm asking about the black flies. I remember going there when I was a kid and my Mom trying to get them out of my hair, maybe it was a really bad year. We just got our trailer and we have a trip to the Adirondacks planned for July but we're debating another trip sooner.

Have you decided where you'll be camping?

We'll be at Point Comfort on Piseco Lake from July 26th to Aug 9th, one of our favorite spots. Three DEC Campground's on the west shore, no hook-up's,
water at all three, showers and dump station at Little Sand.

As you can see we've been enjoying the area for awhile now.

Great information... My wife, daughter and I are looking forward to a trip to the Wilmington/ Whiteface area for a long Mother'sDay weekend. We'd love to hear about other great & more boon docking areas to stay in future trips. This one will my daughter and me a chance to fish the Ausable River for a day or two. A beautiful area.

We use Absorbine jr.reg. or extra strength, it seems to repel them. Learned from a camp host. put on clothes, cuffs , collar and hat band. 2 or 3 dabs is all that is needed. lasts about3 hours

The flys were out in full force this weekend at Assateague but for some reason or other they did not bother us when we were out doors. Did make a mistake and the TV window open and they came home to roost.

We're going to Lewey Lake (a DEC campground also with no hookups) July 20th for a few days and maybe somewhere else, haven't decided where yet. We have to be in New Jersey at the end of the week.

We camped at Lewey Lake last year in a tent and loved it. I'm looking forward to going in my trailer this year (new to RVing).

We were trying to decide where to go for Memorial Day weekend. It's a little late to be making plans, but we are debating which way to go. If it wasn't for the black flies I would go north.

Thanks for the campground info, I'll have to check it out. The DEC campgrounds look like their the nicest ones.

Thanks, I'll have to look into Absorbine, I tend to be allergic to bug repellant but maybe this one would be ok.

Here are some pictures from Lewey Lake, large wooded sites. We went in a tent last year.
