My husband is really interested in checking out the Bisti Badlands in northwestern New Mexico. It appears the closest place is Farmington - does anyone have any info on camping nearer - perhaps on BLM land or someplace we could dry camp nearer to the badlands??
Also any other info on roads, other good places to visit nearby, etc. would be appreciated!
thanks,
sandi

I'd suggest that you just stay in Farmington for that visit. There's just not a whole lot available out there near Bisti. We generally stay at Mom and Pop's RV Park in Farmington. Simple place, not really exciting, but clean showers and right on Murray Drive at Illinios Ave.
There's a Walmart in town where some folks spend the night, but I'd think you'd want to unhitch and leave the AS behind for the day visit down to Bisti.

The roads are good. There is not much out there and you could probably boondock in the parking area, but you're on the Rez and not sure if you would be bothered or not.
Farmington is the closest town with RV parks. To the north is Hovenweep NP and Mesa Verde NP. On the 2nd Friday of the month is the Crownpoint rug auction if you like Navajo rugs, you can buy direct from the weavers. Crownpoint is just south of Bisti.
Also, south of Grants, NM is El Moro National Monument with a nice quiet campground and Inscription Rock with centuries of history.
