Here's another unknown 5-Star bird hunting ranch in wilderness Idaho on the Middle Fork of The Salmon River. Unbelievable experience.

We will certainly check out Hells Canyon and perhaps see if we can access that area, however, do plan on Montana and ND. We each have a dog and they are both experienced on Chukars and Pheasants. The Sharptails sound very intriguing, it would be great to see those. Keep any and all ideas coming.
Thanks

Airstreams and bird hunting

I am a free-lance writer of Airstream stories for magazines and will be doing an article over the winter about people using their Airstream trailers for bird hunting trips.

I am interested in high-rez photos of Airstreams in a bird-hunting setting (ie: in the field, the end of the hunt with the dogs and hunters relaxing, etc. Also, I'd like to hear your stories and about your places you go, camping there, etc.

You can PM me at tomp1937@gmail.com

Go for it and with your Airstream as well. We hunt SD each year for a week after Thanksgiving but due to the unpredictable weather have yet to brave it with our Airstream. SD is the pheasant hunting capitol of the nation and even in a bad year its better than anyplace else. We've hunted from lodges for wild only birds, on farmer's property for a fee and for free with permission, in "walk-in public" areas and our favorite to date, ROWs along roads and fence lines. It's just an awesome state for pheasant so you cannot go wrong. Good luck wherever you go and be safe.

I am currently in the Dakota Campground in Mitchell, South Dakota for first week of pheasant season (for non-residents). Conditions are warm, and very dry this year... Not sure how we'll do but can't imagine it being a bad week even if we don't drop any birds!

Hibby,

Awesome! Please keep us posted. We understand that the bird count is up this year while the rooster count is not. Good luck and we look forward to your updates and our arrival at "Mecca" (Cabela's) in Mitchell as we travel to Chamberlin and Winner for our hunt next month.

Dick

Hibby,

Looking forward to your post-hunt report. We love pictures as well. Where exactly did you set up camp and how was your experience?

Thanks.

My husband heads out to South Dakota Sunday for pheasant hunting. He leaves the rolling Ramada at home because it is winterized and stored. He has been going out there for over 15 years and loves it. He hunts in Presho, S.D.

We'll be doing it as long as we and the dogs can walk. It's a very long drive for us but we block off this time of year every year and have been doing that for almost as long as your hubby.
We look forward to reports from the field.
Presho is in the area we cover as well. We hunt just south of there in Winner and then east near Kimball. Your husband most likely is familiar with Winner.
Good luck to him.

Alright, here's the first update! I am camping at the Dakota Campground at 1800 West Spruce Street in Mitchell, SD. This campground is almost exactly 2 miles west of Cabela's, and close to the highway interchange, which is convenient but I can hear some road noise. I found the campground on RV Park Reviews (RV Park Reviews :: Mitchell, South Dakota ( SD ) - RV Parks and Campground Reviews) and would recommend it. It is small (66 sites) and nothing fancy, but very tidy and well maintained. The owner (Ron) has been very helpful and considerate. I pulled into the campground after a thirteen hour drive, and he greeted me when I arrived and told me to come check in any time during the week, since he knew I'd already been driving for 13 hours. He also told me that weather was supposed to be cold on Thursday night and he would come let me know if he thought I should drain and disconnect my water line to keep it from freezing. He also said he'd be happy to do it for me if I was still out hunting. I will come back here next year simply because I respect the owner as an honest, hardworking person.

Now, I suppose most of you care about the bird situation out here! I hunted Monday and limited out (3 roosters), hunted Tuesday and took 2 roosters (hit a third but lost him in the cat tails), then today only got 1. Today, the winds were 20-30 mph and it wasn't for lack of seeing birds. They were just skittish and flushing 100 yards away. On all days, I have easily flushed at least 24 birds, and most too far to take a shot. I have seen plenty of roosters, and maybe three times as many hens. Also managed to flush three skunks, and thank God the dogs sleep in the back of the truck and not the Airstream.

I have been using the 2012 South Dakota Hunting Atlas (free) to find all of the hunting land, and focused on Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) land. Some properties are great, and some are poor but I will be happy to share my successes if you have the map in front of you and want to PM me.

I have seen very few birds running along the roads and ditches this year, and I would tell you that I think populations are just concentrated in certain areas.

Definitely worth the trip! I will hunt tomorrow and Friday, then head home to my wife and daughters. They are saints for tolerating my hunting, especially since my wife also loves to hunt and wishes she were with me (I think!).
