Bicycle Rack for Classic.

Any suggestions for a bike rack for the classic? Possibly that fits on the back? All help appreciated.

Hi,

This question has been asked many times and the general consensus is to never add any weight to the back of an Airstream trailer. There are folks here who have done it to no ill effect but when you consider the moment arm of weight that far back, most folks think it is asking for trouble.

I bought a receiver hitch for the front of my tow vehicle and put a bike rack on it. I just rotate the bikes ocassionally to even out the bug splats.

If you do a search for bike racks you'll have plenty to read and a variety of opinions.

As said before the concenous is NEVER NEVER add weight to the rear of an Airstream. At the first rally ever for us (newbies ya know) we saw bike racks(on the roof) on an suv and they even were carrying a kyack. So their are other options.

You have an H1 according to your profile info. I would suggest getting a roof rack for it and put your bikes there. I do the same with my Suburban.

I have not and won't put anything of any weight on the back of my Safari.

We are pulling a 31' Classic with a Chevy HD. We modified the weight distributing hitch by attaching an extension from the top of the hitch to a stock two bike Swagman rack. The extension places the bike rack just above the pickup bed and leaves a 6" gap between the upright extension and the tailgate that allows us to open the tailgate far enough to unlatch our bed cover. If anyone is interested in this configuration, let me know and I can take some photos.

For the 4 years we've owned our AS I've puzzled over how to transport our tandem bike safely. It's too long to fit inside the bed of our pickup, and I really don't want to put a rack on the shell. I've considered most of the suggestions found here on the forums, and then, as I was preparing for a recent trip to Yosemite, I tried to fit the tandem inside the Airstream. With a little maneuvering, going in front wheel first and lifting the bike over the dinette as it went in, my wife and I were able to get the tandem inside, where it rested comfortably and safely. We towed about 450 miles round trip to Yosemite, with no dings, dents, or bugs on the bike. This is a pricey piece of rolling stock, so it was reassuring to know it was safe inside the AS. Try it, you might find it to be the easiest, and best, solution.
