Beware of Flooding in Western Canada

Disaster in Calgary - massive flooding.

Since the Calgary Stampede starts in two weeks (organizers say it will still proceed) thought I'd post in case any 'streamers were headed that way. The southern highways from BC to Alberta/Alberta BC have also been blocked by road washouts and mudslides.

3 dead, downtown Calgary off-limits, more flooding possible in western Canada - World News

Talked to our friend in Jasper. She said it is a disaster. So glad we went last year, since all the places we stayed at are flooded or inaccessible...

Could anyone provide more specific information?

We will be at Glacier NP on Monday and Tuesday. Our plans were to cross the border into Canada and work our way North through the parks until we reach Jasper.

I'd be very cautious - your route is taking you straight through the area affected by the floods. The flooding has been catastrophic and the effects won't be fixed within the week.

Banff, yesterday:

From what I read today the East Gate to Banff NP was closed. If you are going thru Calgary check at the border crossing. From what she related travel to the Parks is basically a no go. Roads washed out all the way up and beyond the Icefields. The Bow runs parallel for a long way.
This thread is from a couple from Texas that are basically stuck in the Parks area: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...-100779-6.html

I spoke with a colleague, he live sin SE Calgary, he is OK, but Calgary is shut down as well as Banff. Downtown Calgary is closed until Wednesday. souther Alberta will get the rising waters In a day or so.

Another colleague lives 30 minutes South of Calgary in High River and he is flooded out.

We hope for the best for all of them and they will be in our prayers.

West of Calgary, AB and East of Golden, BC are essentially no go zones. So plan accordingly. Unless you're kayaking...

You could come up through Eureka, Montana and work your way through Kootenay National Park, then to Banff and Jasper. You would then avoid the flood-affected areas.

Sounds like flooding in British Columbia too! Best to call tourist info lines before travelling.

Vancouver, the lower mainland and Fraser Valley is dry. If you head to Seattle, then north on the I-5, you'll be fine.

Those friendly Albertans are showing great spirit. Their motto - "Come 'ell or highwater, we'll get through this."

Calgary is also the hub for WestJet airlines. The cabin and flight crews have filled-in for their colleagues - those whose homes were hardest hit.
