Just returned from Yellowstone: Road construction between Norris Junction and Mammoth, but not bad delays. West of West Yellowstone (actually as one enters Idaho at Targhee Pass) and north of Ashton, ID, there is much construction with significant lane narrowing (with severe drop-offs from shoulders) and delays. Be careful there! Oh, and the Bison are "in rut," which is always interesting, but results in many road delays as tourists clog the roads in various ways. Most Bison were in Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley.

I'm heading to the Tetons and Yellowstone the middle of September and will come in through Jackson hole around the 20th. I plan on spending about 10 days in the 2 parks before heading to Billings to visit relatives. I have about 3 weeks total so, I plan on checking out a few other places before heading home to San Diego. Has anyone been there at that time of the year? This will be my first time there in my AS...any tips?

Mark,

Thanks for the heads up. If we can find vacancies in the Park, we won't be going that way.

Wouldn't recommend going through Rawlins, not very scenic. Cody would be better or even the Dubois route. Was just in Yellowstone, came through the south entrance from Dubois, stayed at headwaters Flagg ranch. Pretty nice, more for big rigs, full hookups. Make reservations early if you plan to stay at Grant village or any of the larger campgrounds. They were all full when we went.

Thanks Racheli,
We may now go through Casper instead. We are grateful for everyone taking the time to respond. It really helps when you are breaking new ground, so to speak. As for Grant Village, I assumed it was first come, first served. Wonder if it will be crowded near the end of August, or the first of September.

Grant, Canyon, Madison, Bridge Bay and Fishing Bridge RV all accept reservations. The rest are first come, first served. Lately, we have been selling out except for Lewis Lake (25' or less).

As the season winds down, the campgrounds start closing entire loops thus reducing capacity. Reservations take the worry out of being close...

Rick

Nice choice going through Casper (where I live)!
Here's the link for the online reservation system for the larger campgrounds. You can see which dates are booked. http://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/

Hope you have a great trip!

You'd be be better off to go from the Tetons over the mountains into Idaho; go through Swan Valley the back way north to Ashton, Idaho, then up to Mesa Falls and Island Park. Then go into Yellowstone via West Yellowstone, Montana. While you are in the area, go see Quake Lake; great camping and fishing along the Madison River.

I'll go 100 miles out of my way to avoid West Yellowstone. Go north to Cook City, and then into the Park. You'll thank me later.
