New Orleans, Shreveport and then Dallas is the straightest route but after Lafayette (lots of Cajun Heritage on display there) to Dallas and beyond it's not very interesting. I40 (old route 66) between Amarillo and on is a hoot. Lots to see and do. Consider a detour, New Orleans to Vicksburg or any number of the old towns in the area. Maybe the Hot Springs in Arkansas.

No need to go thru Dallas . Avoid Dallas , you won't regret it.

Stay warm, take I-10 to Las Cruces and I-25 to Albuquerque.
Check the weather and Temperatures in Amarillo, it can get cold...

When are you traveling? How much time do you have available for the trip?

Greetings from Walton County

You do not mention when you are planning your trip to Albuquerque. If it is during cold weather, I would go with Richard's suggestion and stay in the I-10 corridor until you get to I-25 and turn north.

Both Dallas and Houston are never a good idea while towing an Airstream unless that is your final destination. At least while stuck in traffic in Houston, you are less likely to be freezing your tail off.

I will be taking the trip end of 2nd weekend in March and would like to get there in 2 1/2 days. That way we can spend 5 days in NM. Will take the same amount of time to get back. I really appreciate the feedback!

Suggest you check the weather and if it allows go the Southern route and come back on the Northern. The Dallas/Ft Worth area @ 2300 - 0400 is sound advice. Same holds for Houston area. Rush hour in San Antonio and El Paso is no picnic either. If you go through Shreeveport take the loop around downtown on 20 is ROUGH. If we had 10 days we would drive fewer miles and leave more time for exploring. Maybe that is not an option?

Todd,
Dallas freeways are nightmare when towing. They池e a nightmare when not towing. Lived there, done both.
We値l be towing from Durango to Key West in early Jan.
I use the inRoute app to map alternatives which can be automatically displayed with weather forecasts. Great tool.

Safe Travels,
Joe
