Thanks to all. I believe we will leave Chesterfield VA around 7 am and take the 301 route across the Key bridge on up to Del Memorial. Hopefully we can make Lakewood by 4 to 5.
There are good reasons for choosing Rt. 301 through Delaware to Wilmington instead of staying on I-95 all the way to Wilmington then taking I-295 through New Jersey to I-195 East toward Lakewood. Truckers pulling 80,000 lbs with manual 9-speed transmissions like the flat terrain of Delaware’s 301 which demands less shifting versus the rolling hills on I-95 through Maryland. Speed traps along Rt 301 are slightly worrisome especially through the towns which reduce speeds from 55mph to 25 mph. And Doc Foster has a point about the I-95 bypasses around Baltimore which could lead you into propane restricted tunnels.
Add this following tip to your travel notes: As soon as you’re near the Wilmington area and you can get a clear signal from 1060 AM on your radio stay tuned because they provide “Traffic on the Two’s” meaning every ten minutes at :02, :12: :22 minutes and so on past the hour you’ll get a traffic update for the eight county Philadelphia area. If I-295 North in NJ has trouble consider taking Rt 70 East to Rt 9 North. It’s only a five minute difference to Colonial from the 34A exit off I-295 at Rt. 70 in Cherry Hill NJ as it would be taking I-295 all the way up to Rt. I-195 East.
Speaking of speed traps on 301 - be VERY careful the full length of 301 from I-95 to the Maryland border in Virginia -- at one point around Port Royal, there's actually a warning sign saying something akin to "speed limit means limit" - and they aggressively target, even at 2-3mph over the limit.
