Best Route from Indy to wiliamsburg

I'm headed to Williamsburg and wonder whether 70 to PA76 and down through DC is easier than south out of ohio to 64 and across. 64 looks pretty hilly. Any suggestions? Pulling a 27 INtL FB with a diesel toureg.

Down through DC is scary unless you like traffic...if you end up taking PA76 then 70 to Frederick, MD. From there I would take 15 down through Leesburg. Follow until you hit 66 then take 66 east for a couple miles until you hit 29 then follow towards Culpepper. When you get to Culpepper follow 15 south again until you hit 64 then take 64 east to Williamsburg (through Richmond) - check map to see route. Pretty scenic route but some of the way is large 1 lane road (15 through Leesburg). I have taken it many times and it is a good bypass.

This route should help you miss most of DC traffic and depending on time you will miss Richmond traffic too.

We Virginians avoid driving through or around DC like the plague. No reflection on the denizens thereof.

64 is not bad - it is Interstate, after all. Or you can drop down and pick up I-81 to I-66 then US 17 (four lanes) down to I-95 at Fredericksburg, then I-295 around Richmond and reconnect with I-64 east of Richmond to Williamsburg.

both do nicely - however the first choice IS far more scenic. My sister Karen will normally go south in OHIO and catch 64 in West Va. Nice route in fall colors, but not a lot of places to stop and pull over for dinner unless you're eating in.

Route 17 used to be a beautiful run through the country. Now it's pretty built up starting at Yorktown on down to Newport News, but if you are heading to Williamsburg, then get off 17 and onto the Colonial Parkway right after you go over the bridge. The CP is 35 MPH the whole way and there are bikers and occasional horse riders on it, so enjoy the sights - it's only a few miles to Williamsburg.

Where are you staying in Williamsburg? (I personally prefer to go over the James River Ferry (free - but with a trailer don't do it right at 8 am or 5 pm - choose a midday time) to the south side and then East on Route 10 to stay at Chippokes Plantation. Small and QUIET.

I like 17 too...we drive that way from Fredericksburg to 64 all the time. Speed limit is 65 in stretches and very scenic.

DC not bad if you use the beltway and avoid peak traffic. However 64 better views. And if you are road tripping this weekend Sept 26...PA Turnpike electronic signs are warning everyone of extreme traffic as far back as Pittsburgh due to visit from the Pope in Philly this weekend.
