best national forest campgrounds in sw Co

Planning a trip to southwest Co. Would like to do a lot of camping in the National Forest campgrounds. But which ones? Need suggestions as to the best ones you have visited.

There are lots of great places in the Colorado Rockies. See my comments on boondocking near Wolf Creek Pass in this recent post:

We also stayed at the KOA in Durango, which had a new swimming pool. They had lots of activities for families and kids, including evening movies and a wagon ride around the campground that doubled as a shuttle bus. Durango, Silverton and Ouray have lots of things to do:

Check out the Durango/Silverton Railway, the Old 100 Gold Mine Tour and white water rafting. Also, excellent fishing in the summer, and skiing at Purgatory in the winter. It's a college town, so lots of neat little shops and restaurants in the old downtown area. And, it's cool there!

Haviland Lake campground is beautiful. If you go there during off season, you may be able to snag a site with electric or one of the few sites overlooking the lake. Some pics of our Haviland Lake campsite are on Flikr:

Middle Mountain at Vallicito, Junction Creek and anything in LaPlata Canyon. Call the Durango Land Center 970-247-4874 and ask for a free camping guide for the San Juan NF. This guide covers USFS campgrounds from Wolf Creek Pass to the Utah border and north to Silverton and Rico.

We camped in Amphatheatre (sorry I butchered the spelling) Campground near Ouray, CO several years ago. We loved it.
We were in a pop-up back then, but the site would have handled our Bambi without a problem.
It is a beautiful part of Colorado.
