Been to Tuba City recently?
Has anybody been to Tuba City recently? It's been several years since we were there, and when I looked at the map this afternoon, I discovered a really big, new facility of some kind. Anybody know what it is?
On the attached map, you'll see Main St. and Moenave Rd. At the corner of the two is the Tuba City Trading Post (a really neat place), and beside it on Main is the motel (L-shaped building) and restaurant (shaped like a giant hogan, where you can get a really good Indian Taco!) and RV park behind (an only "ok" place when we were there).
But look just beyond all that on Main! A really big, circular complex that just dwarfs all the rest! What the devil is it??

Lynn
PS: If you want to go by with the Airstream to get an Indian Taco, there's lots of room to park the rig across the street from the restaurant.

Kind of hogan- or kiva-shaped, my guess will be something pertaining to the Navajo Reservation. My gosh that is one gigantic complex!!

Lynn,
Kingfisher24 came through Tuba City on his way back to Texas in October. You can PM him if he doesn't respond to the thread.

Ah, a BIA boarding school! That's it for sure! Thx, Richard!

Went through last September, and thought it was a government facility.
Stopped for gas, was accosted by panhandlers at the Chevron station, and again in Kayenta then Cortez. I guess thats how it is in that area.

Oh, I forgot to add a note. We'd stopped in Tuba City to eat one of the Indian Tacos at the truck stop, reputed by Fran Kosik (1st edition, mind you) to be the best on the rez. Mouths absolutely watering, we drove into town and discovered ... that the truck stop had been razed! Major disappointment!
So we drove up to Bashas, and Maria asked one of the young workers there where to get a decent Indian Taco. And she directed us up Main to the restaurant. Oh, and that restaurant is called ... tada!! ... the Hogan Restaurant.

I think that's the Hopi's new casino/hotel/tourist trap.

Nope, pretty sure it's the boarding school. The link that Richard provided has a map of sorts that shows it; it's shown below. That part of town is also solidly in Navajo country, not Hopi.

i just realized i havent gone that way for almost four years. All this new construction. Where does the money come from? Same with the new casinos they are building. I wonder how soon before we read about somebody vandalizing the place because they dont like it like they did at Newcomb. Sure beats the cramped granite and brick 19th century mausoleum where the gym doubled as the auditorium and lunchroom that I started school in.
