Beartooth Highway

We are planning to travel this road this summer. To tow or not to tow.

Hi from AZ. . .We left the AS and drove the TV on the Bear Tooth. Pretty curvy drive as I recall, and encountered a blizzard near the pass on June 18th. JUNE ! Glad we left the AS at YENP. Red Lodge is a cool little town. . . Regards, Craig

Beartooth Pass was an amazing ride on the Harley but not sure I'd want to take the Caravel on it.
I stayed 4 days in Yellowstone and camped at Indian Creek (river?) campground. If you can get a spot here, it is the nicest of all of them in the park in my opinion. Very secluded and you are not breathing down each other's necks.
Have a great trip!

You will certainly enjoy the ride more if you are not towing. Have driven it a couple of times. No need for me to tow across it. There are campgrounds on the Silver gate side but I saw nothing to attract me to them. For me the Beartooth is good for a quick pass but more interested in spending time in Yellowstone.

Do some searching of the forum. There was a long thread on the topic within the past few months.

I agree with Dingo Girl. I've ridden the Beartooth on my BMW motorcycle. Not sure that i would want to haul my AS through that pass.

I will also be traveling the Bear Tooth highway next July with a group. Does anyone know of off road trails we can drive our Jeeps on, along the way?

Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page for a "Similar Threads" listing of the Beartooth.

there are many rough roads (trails) jutting off the Beartooth from the top of the pass and towards Silvergate.

If not wanting to tow over the Beartooth, check out the Chief Joseph Hwy, just North of Cody, Wy about 30 miles. It goes into Silvergate, and halfway there is the turn to the Beartooth . Great campsites all along that road.

Providing no snow....I travel any improved road in the mountains where I don't exceed the length limit. Never even give it a second thought. With enough TV, and all mechanicals in good order, I just don't understand all the fear.

Again, clear weather, improved roads and read the signs before ascending.

We drove over Beartooth Pass several years ago, from Red Barn into the eastern end of Yellowstone, towing our 27. First, it was stunningly beautiful, and second we did not have any issues towing. You do cross at about 10,000 feet elevation, but it was perhaps the favorite part of our trip to Yellowstone.
