I'm not familiar with the west coast. Is there any beach camping in Oregon or Northern California?

Most of Northern California has cliffs above the beaches, so no camping on the beach. This is about as close as one can get, at Seacliff State Beach on Monterey Bay (which is more of a big bite out of the coast than a sheltered bay).

Oregon has some broad, sandy beaches around the middle coast, but I don't know about beach camping. Most of the west coast's weather comes in off the Pacific and tides can cover the beaches. Plus there are a lot of environmentally sensitive areas, so camping in popular areas, such as beaches, is usually confined.

We recently spent 3 nights right on the beach, just south of the Malaquite campground at Padre island NS.

Spectacular, but cold. We suffered thru for the privilege of the experience and the joy of watching Lily run her little legs off.

Doug took this picture from the doorway our last morning, when the sun was out for about 5 minutes. One of two, brief glimpses of sunshine while we were there.

Pics upside down posted from the IPad.....sorry

I thought for a second that the photo was taken in New Zealand. Nice photo though.

so on some of these beach parks I understand that down on the beach there is no services, but do they have sites that actually have power? when is the best time to plan trips to these sites? I understand that you don't want to go in the dead of summer with the heat, so what is the best time to go?
The wife and I like to go camp at the beach, and we don't have to be right on the beach, but I don't want to have to walk a major distance either. We stayed at Hunting Island SC and loved it if you are in the front spaces, if you are in the back then you are besieged with mosquitos. And that place stays reserved up too.

I would say Feb or march is the best, and early spring minus spring break time....others may have better info,

There are several state and county campgrounds on or near Padre Island NS, with electric, water, a dump station and showers. Other side of the dunes from the shore.

We love the beach with no hookups....if it is not too hot or too cold.
