Badlands, SD

Head east on IH-90 from Rapid City, SD and you will find the Badlands. Now I know what it was popular with the outlaws of the time. One can't drive in that direction without stopping at Wall and walking through Wall Drugs. That was a trip in its self.

I traveled there with my family a couple of times growing up, never forgot my trips to Waldrug. I liked seeing all those silver dollars under the counter. I never was able to ever see a "Jack-alope" however unless is was allreay mounted on the wall. Sure would like to be able to shoot one and have it mopunted on my wall! HEE-HEE!

Hi 68 Tradewind,
Come to think of it, maybe it wasn't a pesky rabbit I was saddled upon, but a genuine jack-a-lope, will have to go find that pic..

Photos taken during our 2006 cross county trip. Loved the Badlands!

I usually get to the Badlands at least every other year. We combine a hunting and visit to one of my fathers old friends who owns a ranch and the campground in Interior, SD next just outside the park. In all my travels I have never seen better sunrises and sunsets than in South Dakota.

Thumbs up

I still remember visiting the Badlands as a kid more than 30 years ago and it's one of the first places I plan to visit with my kids when I get the trailer done. SD is a great place to travel in an Airstream.

Thanks for the picts!

Badlands

Byamcaravanner,
We almost drove right by heading back east and trying to flee the unmufflered motorcycle masses all over SD. So glad we stopped and then stayed three more days. The campground was almost empty, maybe because the dump station was not open.
It is not easy to describe the landscape to anyone and must be seen.
I was trying not to take this sign too personally.

It's lovely spring, summer and fall. It's the winters. We lived in Southern Alberta and it's quite similar in all ways. After suffering through 38 brutal winters we moved.

When I see your pictures it makes me a tad homesick. Just a tad mind you. Then I look out my window at my still green lawn and remember what it was like when those cold winds blew across the land and snow for several months a year.

These are definitely beautiful places to visit in the right seasons. There's a peacefulness, and loneliness almost, to the country.

Really enjoying, and appreciating, the picture logs of your trips. Keep them coming please.

Merry Christmas,
Barry

more Badlands

OK , here are a few more.
We got there very late and when arriving at the Park gate worried that the campground was full. The nice park lady said there were sites available. Asking how far, she said, 27 miles! I drove for this last 9,000 miles and told Jane she could drive the rest of the way. This would be her first time with the Airstream.

Almost right away there was wildlife of all sorts running across the road and I noticed at certain places pulling off the road was not an option as there was quite a drop. This information was withheld until the next day at daylight.

The next morning I talked to a lone motorcyclist at the campground about the best place to go to experience the Park. He said just stay in one place and watch the colors change with the light.
