Please give some reliable input on the potential, I.E, probable impact on or near Lincoln City.!!
My granddaughter and family, including two small children are currently in Oregon, heading for the coast. Actually, they are moving there, as Jon is being transferred from his job in Colorado. They are driving through, staying in motels, not camping. I am concerned for their safety, as they are total newbies to this kind of weather....cyclones, typhoons, etc.

Any real information will be appreciated, and soon, as they are nearing their destination!

I caught a weather report this morning, saying that they expect two storms back to back. Both high wind events. First with 70 mph winds at coastal areas.
The second is said to be expected to be exceptionally windy, up to 100 mph in coastal areas.
Unless they have a Snug secure place to arrive at, they may want to take this forecast into consideration.

Not the greeting they were hoping for I'm sure.

I live in Portland and have done for 8 of the last 10 years. I am not a meteorologist (sp?) but here is my 2 cents.

We are having some real weather right now. Lots of rain for the next week and the wind has picked up.

This is worse than normal, but not unprecedented.

Lincoln city is getting a lot of rain and is under a high wind warning. This means that some branched could come down from trees and stuff like that. You won't find me camping on the beach this weekend put it that way.

In short: I would not be concerned about this, it is a winter like storm and normal sensibilities prevailing all will be fine. It is not like what just happened in Florida..

The worst of the weather will happen on Saturday, so if they can hold off arrival until Sunday then all will be well.

Oops! Too late. They are already there, in a motel in Lincoln City, in the upper tsunami evacuation zone. (Captain Cook Motel). Melissa says they are currently experiencing heavy rain and are trying to stay informed via TV WEATHER CHANNEL.

I gave her recommendations on preparations, supplies to go get, well before the panic shoppers, hopefully. They do have ample supply of canned goods, a few candles, but, not much else. I gave her a list and she will go out and get those.

More info on progress of this storm as it heads toward my family will be appreciated. I also have another granddaughter living in Bellview, Washington,which appears to be a possible target area.

The entire area is under storm/wind watch. But as noted, these are typical windy storms we get. They have nothing to do with tornadoes, tsunami, etc. Yes, some trees may fall and such. But it is not a dangerous storm per-se.

Power failure is usually the worst problem. Our children are living close to Bellevue and my company is in Bellevue. So far all is OK other than the storm warning in place. We live an hour so south and other than heavy rain at times, nothing else is going on.

This is just winter weather on the west coast. Tsunamis are a result of earthquake and not even in the frame.

Check out KATU NEWS out of Portland OR. Tried to paste the current weather update but it wouldn't let me. Seems like it's getting stronger in Lincoln City. There are tornado warnings and one landed in Manzanita. I'm about a hour from Astoria OR on the Washington side and for us with the wind and rain it's a normal fall day.

It's a pretty good storm but not catastrophic. The Oregon coast gets what they call hurricane force winds anywhere else, at some point pretty much every year. We call it a winter storm

. Oregon soil can handle quite a lot of water. I wouldn't camp on a river bank this weekend. As the water rises over the course of the next 4 days there will likely be some flooding along the rivers.
Try not to worry. We moved here from San Diego 22 years ago. We have come to actually enjoy observing the power of nature while being thankful for a warm dry place from which to watch. It's a good idea to have basic things around for power outages. We heat our house with a woodstove for that reason. But honestly, outages are rare even in my low population, remote corner of the coast. We get a little disappointed when it doesn't happen. Hubby carries a chainsaw in his truck during big storms in case he comes across a tree in the road somewhere.
It will be a memorable start to their adventure on the coast for sure!

In storms like this there's only one "reliable" thing to do - Hunker down, stay put, and ride it out.

Rule of thumb = There's no substitute for safety.

.....although I will admit, storm watching on the Pacific NW Coast is great sport.

Thank you all so much! As parents, we never stop worrying, and I sometimes, think, even more so for our grandchildren! To me, family is the most important thing in life! Melissa said she'll call me daily to let me know they are safe.

This storm system, is indeed a strong welcome to a young family from landlocked Durango, Colorado!

Tomorrow will be fun. Trees will come down, power will go out... As long as you are not stupid you should be fine... don't go swimming in the sea or such...

I live right on the southern Oregon coast. Actually 230 ft up off the water facing south (the worst possible direction). The NOAA data I am seeing says wind gusts over 80 mph but nothing yet I have seen that says this is a "mega storm". Like other people said above it seems to fit within the description of the ordinary winter storm around here -- at least that is what I am hoping.

we had a house in Yachats for many years. about an hour south of lincoln city. storms are common, you want to be out of the velocity zone and not under big trees. if they are up in the higher parts of lincoln city and away from big trees I would just sit back and enjoy mother nature.

As mentioned above storm watching on the coast is great sport. Many years ago while living in So. Calif. we were visiting friends in Salem, Oregon. They found great joy in reserving a motel right on the beach so we enjoy some up close storm watching.

We moved to the Northwest nearly 20 years ago and the only concerns we have during these storms are falling trees and an occasional power outage.

Your kids are moving to a beautiful place in both good and bad weather. I hope they enjoy it.

I'm following a similar thread on another forum.
The reports so far from all over the PNW are far less intense than the forecast predicted.

Hope your family are doing ok Colorado Lady, and staying touch to put your mind at rest.

The weather folks these days seem inclined to really build up the forecast.
In my mind to cover themselves in the remote possibility that things could get that bad.
Unfortunately the boy that cried wolf comes to mind.
This does undermine their credibility.
