Picacho Peak Arizona State Park

Hi All...

We just updated our travel log for our Thanksgiving weekend in Bisbee, but then we went and sneaked in a long weekend trip to Picacho Peak last weekend...so here we go again. Finally it is cool enough in SoArizona to get out there...actually this weekend it was pretty nippy, but we all stayed warm and cozy.

We met Airstream friends Louis & Sergio ("LHall") from Phoenix there...they are hosting the WBCCI Four Corners Unit Rally at Picacho over New Year’s and they wanted to get the lay o' the land before the gathering...so we all decided to make a camping weekend of it. Why not, right? Any excuse to go camping!

The weather was variable and we had some cool (cold) weather, strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday night, but overall we had a great time... nobody blew away an nobody’s awning got ripped off by the wind, so we were happy, and we had a blast with Louis & Sergio.

The link to the travel log us below and we’ve included a few pictures below to entice you to go to the website to see more...though we didn’t take a lot of pictures this trip...but please visit us there anyway... (You can always go back to previous trips to Picacho if you want more pics and information)...

We say “sneaked in a long weekend” because we are heading out next Tuesday for our winter holiday trip to the San Deigo County Parks and neighboring areas. We’ll be back in Arizona just in time to catch the last night of the Airstream Rally at Picacho, so we will have a chance to see some of the good folks of the Four Corners Unit again. It should be a great trip.

If you have trouble with the link below, try emptying your cache and refreshing your browser...and hopefully that will get everything aligned properly. (If you get weird text run-arounds in the text, turn on your “Baskerville” font, and that should fix that.)

We hope you enjoy.

Happy Trails!

Great pictures of a great location. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the New Years party.

Notice the peak in the background of several of the shots. Can you hear it calling, climb me...

The Holidays in CA

Time for another update on the travels of AZBambi. We left SoAZ for SoCal on 23 Dec... Our first stop was Dos Picos Park in San Diego County Unfortunately, weather didn't cooperate well for the San Diego portion of the trip. The area was having unseasonable wet weather, and it rained all day Christmas Day at Dos Picos near Ramona, CA, so we pretty much stayed in. The did sun eventually came out, though, and things started to dry out. Larry & Bill (Silvergate) from San Diego drove over for a visit while we were there. That was pleasant!

Then we headed higher into the mountains near Julian, CA, to stay at Wm Heise, another San Diego County Park. We got there a week after a huge snow storm dumped on the park and turned it into a war zone of downed trees and limbs. Thanks goodness we were not there when that happened or AZBambi would have been dented for sure. The aftermath was bad enough. It was pretty torn up by bulldozers and workers' efforts to clear the debris and get the snow off the roads and sites. And it was cold. But we survived and will return some day ... after it's "healed" a bit.

From Wm Heise we descended east into the Anza-Borrego Desert to stay at Borrego Palm Canyon Campground near Borrego Springs, CA. The weather was very nice there...sunny and warm and calm...a nice change from the freezing nights in the mountains. There was a casual "convergence" of Airstreams at A-B...we counted 9 in total during our stay, no two the same. We met Larry & Bill again there for New Year's. Rich and Eleanor Luhr (rluhr) and their daughter Emma were there as well, and Bill and Beth (wkerfoot) joined in on New Year's Day. Friends of the Luhrs were there from SoCal, too, and friends of Bill & Larry came as well...so some of us knew the others would be there, and some of the folks were unexpected but welcomed additions to the "silver convergence"... It was a pleasant time.

Then we headed back to Picacho Peak AZ Sate Park between Phx & Tucson to catch the last night of the 4CU New Year's Rally there. We brought the rain with us, apparently because it started raining the next morning and rained for the whole next day as the last of the Ralliers headed out. It was short visit with them, but it was fun.

We stayed a few more days at Picacho to decompress, and AS friends from Prescott, AZ, stopped by for a night on their way back to Prescott after a New Year's trip to SoAZ and Bisbee. We got home on 6 Jan...2 weeks out. Already looking to the next trip to start!

Below are some pics. Please visit our travel log (link below) for the Full Monte on the trip. We've stared a new trip list page for 2009, so you'll need to click on the link on that page to go to the 2008 trips to visit get to the Holiday trip (the last listing on the 2008 page).

By the way, we have modified the website a bit so that those of you who were having problems with pages downloading slowly should find the site more friendly.

See you down the road!

Gilbert Ray Campground, Tucson

We needed a long weekend to just relax and "get out of Dodge"... and back in the Bambi...so Gilbert Ray was a great choice. It's only 19 miles from home! We were only out 3 nights, but it was pleasant and restful...wish we'd stayed longer actually, but hey, we do what we can. Gilbert Ray is a Pima County-run campground in the Tucson Mountain Park...down the road from Old Tucson Studios, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and the Saugaro National Monument (West). It lies on the west side of the Tucson Mountains with Tucson proper on the east side of the mountains, so it seems like you are further way from everything than you really are. The desert in this area is beautiful ... some of the prettiest around ... and has sweeping views of the valley to the west. Some great sunsets can be had. It's a fairly large campground, too, with both tent and RV camping...electricity hookups, water throughout the park (but not at individual sites), dump station and bathrooms (no showers). We recommend it to anyone who wants to be in the desert but not to far from town...

Some photos are below, but for the full story go to our travel log (link below)...

Ease on down the road!

Terry;

These look great. That damage from the storm in Calif. was something else. Usually in an area like that they are not used to much or any snow fall and when it happens it does cause a lot of damage.
So far our winter has been pretty mile. We even were able to see our driveway (all 300' of it) until Sunday night when we got another 2 inches of snow. It is melting again. Night times get pretty chilly @ low 20's so it takes a while to warm up so it starts melting.
See you and Greg in Cottonwood.

Thanks, Bob & Lou...it was a strange thing being in the midst of all that "demolition" at Wm Heise...felt like we were on a mercy mission or something! But we survived... Looking forward to seeing you at Dead Horse 3...only a couple of weeks sway now!

Patagonia Lake State Park (AZ)

We spent Super Bowl Weekend at Patagonia Lake State Park in extreme southern Arizona not far from the Mexico border between Patagonia, AZ and Nogales, AZ. I's a good winter retreat frequented by birders from across the country and Canada. It's a great recreational lake with RV and tent camping, boating, swimming, fishing and birding, as well as hiking. Of course, there's not much swimming in the winter! Days were in the 60s/70s and nights in the 40s this trip... We took a wine-tasting trip to one of the local wineries (fun!), and just generally enjoyed ourselves... Below are some pics...you can get the whole story and a lot more pictures at out travel log (link below)... See you down the road!
