Picacho Peak State Park (AZ)

Hey All...

Well finally, we have got our travel log web site (link below) updated to include out get-away over Veteran's Day weekend to Picacho Peak State Park, about 45 miles north of Tucson on I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix... And, even though we'd just been there, we went back for a long weekend Thanksgiving weekend just to get out of Dodge and to enjoy the long weekend and the turkey dinner leftovers.

On the trip after Thanksgiving, we got to meet our first Airforums folks! lhall (Louis & Sergio) from Phx went down to Bisbee to spend the weekend at The Sahdy Dell (our recent trip there is also on our travel log), and they stopped by Pichaco Peak on thier way home to Phoenix on Sunday and found us (we were the only other Aristream in the park, so it wasn't hard)...Great guys and a wonderful 1962 28' Ambassador that they've only had since July...already they have made headway, plus hey are able to use it! It was nice to ifnally meet someone from the forums! We look forward to seeing more of them...

Anyway...back to the task at hand... Here are a few puctures of the Veterna's Day Picahco trip...the "full monte" is on our website link below. (If you've visited the site recently, you may need to refresh your browser to get the updated files.)...

Pic #1: Picacho Peak from our camp site just before sunset...
Pic #2: Our camp site with Picacho Peak in the background...
Pic #3: Looking past our campsite southeast toward Tucson and the Catalina Mountains...
Pic #4: Along side the Bambi looking Northeast away from the Peak toward I-10 and themountains beyond...
Pic #5: The view from our Bambi door...
Pic #6: Looking northeast toward I-10 (you can see the traffic) just before sunset...
Pic #7: A Saguaro cactus with Picacho Peak in the background...
Pic #8: A Saguaro near our campsite, up close and personal....
Pic #9: Setting sun reflected on the Bambi...I love this shot...
PIc #10: Sunset looking west...

Hope you enjoy...

Stay tuned for maore adventures!

Heading over to Roper Lake State Park 6 miles south of Safford, AZ on highway 191 (a favorite haunt) tomorrow for a long weekend (through Monday noonish)...if anyone's in the neighborhood, stop on by and say "hey"...

Wow, looking at those pics, I keep on wondering what the devil we're doing by staying the winter here in Angel Fire. Argh! We've got bunches of snow of snow on the ground now, and more is due tomorrow (opening day of the slopes).

The only good news, if you can call it that, is that our snow plow (aka 1948 Ford 8N) now has its snow chains on, and the brakes work.

Hello Terry and Greg,

It was nice to meet someone from the forums and another Airstreamer in the flesh. We had fun comparing the new and old in our Airstreams. It is amazing to me how similar they are even after 45 years. Meeting you guys was a nice finish to our Thanksgiving weekend in Bisbee. We hope to meet up again with you guys sometime after the first of the year.

Take care and Happy Holidays!

Joshua Tree National Park?

We did another short trip to Roper Lake State Park from the 14th to the 17th...pretty darn cold, but we survived...will update with some pictures when I can...

And we are heading out for our winter after-Christmas-through-New Year's trip to the lower Colorado River above Parker, AZ to stay at Buckskin Mt. and Cattail Cove State Parks...we are going to be out for about a week and a half...

My question...we are thinking of maybe hopping over across the CA border to Joshua Tree National Park for a few days before we head home...don't know for sure how that's going to work out so we haven't made reservations...and have not been there yet...and would prefer not to have to make reservations if we don't need to...do you think there will be a reasonable number of campsites available say the 3rd of 4th of Jan or are reservations really necessary? We are thinking of going to the Black Rock or Indian Cove campgrounds and then going south through the park to hook up with I-10 to head home...

Thanks...

Have a safe trip! The drove through Joshua last January on the way to a rally at 29 Palms. We did not see anyone in the park, but it was snowing pretty hard at the time.

When you are at the Buckskin you might want to stop at the Blue Water Casino Resort. It is on the way out of Parker headed north. The food is ok and the price is good. I stay there a lot and enjoy the game of blackjack.

I look forward to your pictures...

Thanks, Richard...

We will drive safely...don't know if we'll make it to Joshua Tree, but it's a possiblity.

Where was the Rally held? There is a San Bernadino County campground near 29 Palms that sounds interesting...Knott Sky Park is that where the Rally was?...maybe stay there and explore into the park? We'll see...

Will be thinking of you all at Picacho...you should have a blast!

The rally was held at the 29 Palms resort. It was a full hook up park with not much to offer. It would not be on my list of places to recomend...

We have been remiss in our responsibility, and have not updated our trip log (link below) with our most recent trips...since before Christmas. (Been busy caming!)

Since then we have been to the Lower Colorado River above Parker, AZ for 12 days (wonderful)...then 2 weeks later a long weekend for MLK Day at Gilbert Ray Campground near Tucson (chort getaway, but very very nice)...then this last weekend, 4 nights at Pataogonia Lake State Park between Patagonia and Nogales, AZ (a little chilly at night, but we stayed cozt warm...and cold rain the morning we came home)... We have lots of great pics and some fun AS encounters to relate so will get back with those...

In the meantime wanted to relate the fact that there were 5 Airstreams at Patagonia Lake during our stay...3 Bambis...us, a new AS friend from N. Carolina who we originally met at Gilbert Ray, another Bambi (all three were 06 19') belonging to a couple from Maine on an epic tour of the SW and Mexico witht heir Lab and cat...plus an Excella from Ohio (who we never met because they left early the day after we got there)...and a Classic from Sacramento...also on an extended tour of the SW meandering back to Sacramento by March sometime... All were fun folks and we all found it amazing that there were so many Airstreams in once place...even the SOB folks commented on the number of Airstreams!

That's all for nowl But will try to give some pics and an updated website soon...

Hi all...finally got our travel log (link below) updated to include our trip to the Lower Colorado River above Parker, AZ, staying at Buckskin Mt State Park...we were there from 27 Dec through 5 Jan, then headed back to SoAZ to spend a few nights at Picacho Peak State Park...back home by 7 Jan. I've posted a few pictues from Buckskin below...for the full story and lots more pictures go to our website... It was a nice trip! Pics below:

1 & 2: Views of Buckskin from a trail above looking across the Colorado River toward CA...
3: Our camp site at Buckskin (elect + water...full hookups available too)...
4: Bill Wiliams River where it feeds into Lake Havasu...
5: The London Bridge (and Terry with the Girls) in Lake Havasu City...
6: Sadie & Annie looking all pretty in the Bambi...

We have also expanded previous log entries for Roper Lake State Park (adding 14-17 Dec 07)...and Picacho Peak State Park (adding 23-26 Nov 07)... Trips to Gilbert Ray Camp Ground (18-21 Jan 08) and Patagonia Lake State Park (31 Jan - 4 Jan 08) will be up soon, so stay tuned!

Great pictures. I know the area well. About a mile south of the Bill Williams picture on the east side of the road is where my company pumps water out of the lake and sends it to Phoenix and Tucson. It's a 7 story building, but only the 7th story is above ground.
