Roper Lake, AZ - Spring Break

Hey All ... believe it or not we are catching up on our travel logs... I am posting three trip updates to tonight...this is the first... Roper Lake, AZ for Spring Break in March. We were going to meet friends from ABQ at Roper for Spring Break, but they ended up not being able to go ... but we went ahead. This is the first time we've left for a trip on a Sunday... We were SURE we'd be able to get a space on a Sunday afternoon, but noooo... the electric loops (2) were was completely full or reserved during the next few days. So we ended up staying in the group area and dry camping Sunday through Thursday...then the group area was booked, so home we came... It worked out OK...luckily we had taken our genny with us, so all was well. We've caped there many times, and this is the first time it has every been full, and the first time we ad to resort to dry camping. We wanted to go to Roper one more time before it clsed down at the end of March. Then we learned shortly afterwards that the state had decided to leave it open, at least for a while linger... We had a good time, but it was certainly a different "Roper expreience" for us...

Below are a few pics...pi can go to our travel log website — the link is in our signature below —for the whole nine yards and more pics...

Pic #1: Our lonely site in the Group Area ... lonely for the first night, anyway...
Pic #2: Our site with Mt Graham behind .. still snow-capped and beautiful...
Pic #3: The lake from the groups site shore...
Pic #4: View of the Group Area from around the end of the lake...
Pic #5: View of the mountains south of I-10 while heading south on 191 to I-10 from the lake...

Gilbert Ray Campground for Easter Weekend

We had not been to Gilbert Ray Campground for some time, so we made a trip before it gets too warm...there is electricity at the sites and water is available throughout the campground, but not at the sites.... It's a great weekend getaway for us because it's just 40 minutes from our home on the west side of the Tuscon Mountains near Old Tucson Studios and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum...it's part of the Tucson Mountain Park which is run by Pima County. You'd never know you were that close to town. It's a very pretty place in beautiful desert setting with broad vistas looking west to Avra Valley, and the desert is RIGHT at your doorstep. We met friends from Clarkdale there for Easter weekend as they were bring their AS down to Tucson for service at Oasis RV... We had great weather, beautiful sunsets and cool nights... a great time was had by all!

Here are a few pics, but please visit our travel log...the link is in our signature below ... for lots more pics and details...

Roosevelt Lake, AZ - A Joint rally : AZ Unit & 4CUnit

This was our first joint rally with the WBCCI Arizona Unit (we are members of the 4Corners Unit). It was originally slated for Roper Lake but when the State of AZ decided to close Roper, the rally got moved to Roosevelt Lake, which is in the Tonto National Forest, NE of Phoenix. (Then the state decided not to close Roper as scheduled...after rally plans had been changed. )

The lake is formed by the Theodore Roosevelt Dam, and it quite large. There are several large group areas with sub-loops for different parties ...and there are just as many regular camping areas sprinkled along route 188 that follows the western shoreline, each with sub-loops within them. It's a huge boating destination for summer water fun, but be forewarned... camping would be warm in the summer without your own power for AC...it's all dry camping. The best time for camping, therefore, is in the fall though the early spring. We were there mid-April which was right on the cusp of it being too warm...another week later and we would have wanted AC for sure. (There are showers, water is available but not at sites, and there's a dump station servicing all the campgrounds.)

This was also our first trip to Roosevelt, and we will return during the fall, winter or spring to explore further... It's a pretty area with a lot of nice desert growth and stately saguaros, and would make for good dry camping in cool desert weather... The Tonto Cliff Dwellings are nearby as well.

Here are a few pics to tempt you to visit our travel log website ...the link is in our signature below... enjoy!

Fool Hollow Lake & The Mogollon Rim

Hey Folks! We are finally caught up on updating our travel log! Our latest trip was in May to Fool Hollow Lake State Park near Show Low, AZ with Tucson friends for a rendezvous with ABQ friends ... We introduced all of them to Fool Hollow and had a blast.

When that party was over, they went on home, and we went west from Show Low to scout campgrounds on the Mogollon Rim between Heber and Payson, AZ for future trips. First, we stayed at Mogollon Campground where Jim & Min (Jimmini) are campground hosting for the summer... We missed seeing the 4CU folks who had been there for the weekend, but we got to see JulianneJ who stayed over a few more days, and Jim & Min, of course. Good times.

While at Mogollon Campground we scouted a cluster of several Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest campgrounds in the Rim area, then moved to one of them — Sinkhole, about 5 miles from the Mogollon Campground for the rest of the week...it was great. The Rim is a beautiful area with fantastic views from the Rim... We will definitely go back ... it's a "doable" drive from Tucson to get out of the desert summer heat for a weekend...

Please go to our Travel Log (link in our signature below), for the whole sheebang and lots of pictures. Below are some pics to tease you to go see more...

Stay tuned, and Happy Trails!

Pic #1: Stopped at a view point on the north side of the Salt River Canyon between Globe & Show Low, AZ...quite a gorge... That's us in the foreground and our friends behind us with their pop-up... (and some stranger behind them. )
Pic #2: The Salt River from the view point...
Pic #3: Our double ("buddy") campsite at Fool Hollow Lake State Park...
Pic #4: Fool Hollow Lake ... see the duck family?
Pic #5: Our campsite at Mogollon Campground...
Pic #6: Greg at the edge of the Rim...within walking distance of Mogollon Campground...
Pic #7: "Bambi on the Edge" ...at a Rim trail parking lot...while moving from Mogollon Campground to Sinkhole Campground...
Pic #8: Our campsite at Sinkhole Campground...from the tall ponderosa pine woods...
Pic #9: A lush-green meadow and marsh near our campsite at Sinkhole Campground... (probably where the giant mosquitoes were raised...)
Pic #10: Willow Springs Lake about 1.5 miles up the road from Sinkhole Campground... a really pretty and serene mountain lake...

White Mountains, AZ

Hi all... We returned from 9 nights in the White Mountains of Arizona last weekend (27 June) ... had a great time. We spent 3 nights at Luna Lake near Alpine, AZ at 7900 feet...then 3 nights at Rainbow Campground in the Big Lake area at 9100 feet and then 3 nights at Rolfe C. Hoyer Campground near Greer, AZ at 8300 feet.

It was great ... cool days, very cool nights, a couple of days of early monsoons rains while at Greer, and just a generally great time. We dry camped the whole time and had no reservations so that we could play travel by ear.

There are more campgrounds to explore in the White Mountains, of course, and we checked some of those out for future reference as well. It's a great place to escape the summer heat! Visit our travel log (link below in our signature) for the full story and lots and lots of pictures... Here are a few pictures to lure you to our site ... happy trails!

NoAZ and The Mogollon Rim - 23 Aug - 5 Oct

The month of July we were home-bound between the heat and our schedules, so we were very ready to get out and camp in August. We left 23 August for northern Arizona, to Pinegrove Campground in the Coconino National Forest about 16 miles SE of Flagstaff on Lake Mary Road... We've camped there several times before ... it's our favorite campground in the area. We didn't make reservations and only got in (on a Monday!) because our rig is small and could fit in the only site left...lucked out again... We were there there 3 nights...

From Pinegrove we travel SE on Lake Mary Road to meet AZ 87 where we headed northeast toward Winslow, AZ...to a new campground for us ... Rock Crossing ...in the Mogollon District of the Coconino NF. This area isn't what folks typically mean when they refer to "The Rim" which is in the Sitgreaves National Forest...it's actually north of the edge of The Rim, but it has its own dramatic drop-offs and rugged terrain. Rock Crossing was a great campground ... 2.5 miles south of 87 on a gravel road ... dry camping, with water available, new vault toilets and very neat and well-maintained sites. We chose a site maybe 50 feet from the edge of the drip-off with beautiful views...no sleep walking allowed, though! There was a "managed forest fire" in the valley below, so there was some haze and smoke in the air, but the rain we had cleaned that up pretty well.

Blue Ridge Reservoir is about 2 miles further on the road past the campground ... and in a very rugged area. The only access to the water is by a single boat ramp, and the reservoir winds around the bases of the mountains that contain it... it looks more like a slow-moving river than a reservoir because it's so narrow. We were at Rock Crossing 5 nights and enjoyed every bit of it. We'll be back. The area is not as heavily used as The Rim on highway 260...just far enough off the beaten path an further from the Phx area that the hordes didn't descend on the weekend quite so much.

From Rock Crossing we went south to Payson and then east on 260 up into The Rim area where we stayed in Sinkhole Campground, another familiar campground for us. We were supposed to meet friends from Tucson there for Labor Day weekend, but at the last minute they were unable to join us. Happily, we had other friends from the Four Corners Unit gathering at Mogollon Campground where Jim & Min were hosting for the Labor Day weekend, so we headed there (about 5 miles) each day we were there... We had a great time hanging out with Jim & Min, Richard & Jan, Julianne, Louis & Sergio and Eric & Renée and their boys. It was a sort of impromptu 4CU mini-rally ... always fun to see the gang!

We left for home on Sunday, 5 Oct rather than waiting till Monday when everybody would be heading back into the desert. Glad we did. The traffic was bad enough as it was! We were out 2 weeks ...sorta made up for not getting our at all during July. (OK, not really, but I keep telling myself that.)

Here are some pics...the full story will be posted on our travel log later this weekend. Come on by!
