I drive Houston often. If your route is via US-59 it is the least problematic of any road. I've rarely had a problem. And that's at 77,000-lbs.

Avoiding Houston and Austin?

Program your GPS to avoid toll roads while in Houston. We got stuck on one that only takes ez-pass, no cash. What a pain!

I live in austin and recently traveled the same route.
Take toll road I 30 around austin . It dumps back into I35 in Georgetown. Then I 35 to I35 east at Hilsborough to I 30 into Texarkana. There is construction along the way that does influence the traffic but if you avoid busy travel periods it will not affect you too much. Several nice rest area along the way also.
You can travel through austin on I 35 but odds are you will hit traffic between buda and Georgetown . Avoid rush hour at all costs!

Have pulled through Houston several times with no problems but avoid the toll roads there and rush hour no matter which direction your going.

The Sam Houston Toll Road is one of the best choices at any time to circle Houston.

Taking Toll Roads gets you to the congestion sooner and more expensively. The exception being the 30 from I10 to Georgetown.. There are still 'left lane louies' but at your speed won't be much of an issue.

North of Austin, Georgetown you will get to Salado.. narrow lanes and construction, not enough room for a couple of 18wheelers.. they knocked a bridge down on top of a Texas DOT worker..

So, I would 'exit' at Hutto.. where Hwy 79 crosses underneath it. The toll booth is snug but you can make it...

Oh, In "downtown' Hutto there is the 'Texan Cafe'.. pretty nice place.. and great desserts. It is on the North side of 79:

They don't have full hookup sites but we love it and camp there at least twice a year. In fact, I'm headed up there next weekend for an Old Tyme music festival they have at the park each year in early April. All day Saturday sitting under the oak trees playing old time music. Lots of dulcimers, guitars, mandolins and I'm usually the only fiddler.
A second vote for Trace State Park.
There is Pickin' at the Lake in Grenada in September for bluegrass fans.
We stay at the North Abutment Campground for whenever we stay in Grenada.
The WBCCI Mississippi Unit is having a rally at Trace State Park in May.

Avoiding Houston and Austin?

Taking toll roads around Houston without an EZ pass is just a mistake. We made that mistake and spent valuable time on the phone with the tolling authority getting our toll paid and avoiding a fine. If you have an EZ pass, enjoy the ride.

We stayed at a good place in Pearland, Advanced RV Park. Nice folks, pristine showers and rest rooms, nice pool, good laundry. Recommended for an overnight in the Houston area, though it's full of snowbirds in March.
