Dang, I wish we lived closer to Utah!
(Brad is very, very glad we do not live closer to UT!)

E Bay camper
Hi I've just joined today. That camper in Utah was listed in Craiges list this winter.I almost bought it but because of the heavy snows was unable to get there. Speaking with the seller it'll need some "tlc"but he said it's all there.
These campers are anodized and can't really be polished. Also I saw one where I live in Moab and decided I did not like the interior layout. It being too cramped with a shower and all. I ended up buying an old early 60's Colorado Coach camper with a cozy all realwood intreior for $200. Since I plan to use it for knocking around the boomdocks I won't worry about damaging it too much.
Good luck ED

These are pictures of a slide in that was for sale here last year. It's no longer parked where this picture was taken so I assume it's been sold.
If I remember correctly, the details on the fact sheet said it was a '67, needed an 8ft bed and the asking price was $3500.

The Avion is built with anodized aluminum. It will not polish to a mirror finish.

Alaskan Camper
I've always bee intriqued about the Alaskan Camper. It's an aluminum shell camper much like an Avion (and Airstream) that raises and lowers.

What a nice looking rig!

How about an insulated topper that would sleep two with minimal equipment ? Perhaps just AC and heat. Does anyone have plans or does anyone make such a thing?

Trailer Buff has several. There are two in that picture, plus they had another one they actually were using when they went to a rally with the WDCU last June.

Avion TC
My wife and I are searching for an Avion TC. Restored if possible but I am fairly handy with anything except the aluminum. If anyone has a lead on a solid one let me know. I know of the one for sale in MO and may fly out to look at it but wished something was closer to North Carolina weekend driving distance.

There is one in Virginia between Newport News and Williamsburg on old route 60. It's been sitting in the front yard for over a year. No for sale sign though.
But it's been sitting...

Those are cool campers but are most saying you need at least a 1 ton pick up to carry the wieght or will 3/4 ton do?

1/2 ton to 3/4 will haul the camper just fine. I used to haul an Avion truck camper on my F-150. It was an older model and I added overload springs to the truck. I never had a problem with the weight of the camper. I am sure a 3/4 ton model would be the ideal hauler for a truck camper.

I think our 1965 C10 Avion truck camper weighs around 1800 pounds according to an old brochure I got with it. When choosing a truck I rounded the 1800 pounds up to 2000, figuring that when we renovated the camper it was more likely to end up heavier rather than lighter.
According to the 2005 Superduty truck brochure an F-250 4x4 long box crew cab has a payload of 2600 pounds with a diesel engine and 6-speed manual. I don't know what difference it makes if you have an automatic, which we do. An F-350 with the same configuration has a payload of 4200 pounds. We went with the F-350, thinking that 2600 pounds did not leave enough margin for passengers and other stuff after loading 2000 pounds of camper.

Avion TC
We have a 4x4 3500 dually for added side support and a air lift system, used to have a Lance that weighed in close to 4000 so fully loaded this should be much lighter. Saw one fully restored out west and it was just beautiful. Had delamination problems with the Lance even with meticulous care because of seams and cracks due to design. I have heard some of the same with the best on the market right now the Bigfoot and Northern lite. The avions have been around 40+ years! I can't imagine any of the fiberglass shells lasting that long. Just seems to be the best design in truck campers. Even having one fully restored the price still is far less than a new fiberglass ($39,000). Appreciate the input and any further help you can give me. Marty

I have a 69 c-11 Avion that I've been slowly rebuilding (not restoring) for the past few years.
You have to keep in mind that the wings and the floor are still wood and the window, door and skin seams will leak if not maintained. The wings seem to be the most vulnerable to rot so check the jack mounts carefully. The exterior of the wood sections is covered with aluminum sheet so spotting soft rotted sections can be difficult.
I'm not sure if they were all done this way but, mine has a black tank only and very little room to fit a gray tank.
The insulation is foam which also helps add rigidity to the skeleton. The original floors and wings are a composite of plywood-- foam-- plywood.
I found the cabinet doors (at least on mine) were veneer over 1/2" particleboard, not the solid maple others seem to tout.
Don't get me wrong I'm not bashing these campers it's just that you have to realize they also have they're problems.
I paid $500 for mine with working a/c, fridg., range and water heater. That price also included leaks and poorly done repairs by POs.
Most of the units I've seen for sale ranged from free to $4000 for a very nice one that was maintained by Cayo repair who were the original builders.
I would check what is or has been for sale over at Avion Travelcade-----

Denise,
I'm in the same process , got mine about a year . , No serious rot but the wings were getting wet . The major culprit on mine was the range hood vent ,very poor original installation , easy fix. I found a 10 gal tank that I think will fit for a gray water , the next step.
Post some pics of your progress so far.

I'm not sure if you can make it out but this is the new floor, sides, and wings.
The interior was completely removed including skin. We found places where the skin was buckled from a p.o. shooting foam into the cavity, I would guess to seal or hide leaks. After the skin was removed we found black mold so all the foam was removed.
I'm at the point now where all but a few minor leaks are fixed and we've relocated the a/c forward (where it was designed to be mounted), installed an escape hatch over the bed and installed a fantastic fan where the p.o. had the a/c mounted.
Much more to come but I'll post down in vintage kin.

69Cayo , you are doing some major work there . I was more fortunate with mine , no structural problems , got it in time. Notice the Cayo's have a window in the cabover , does the bed go front to back or side to side? Are you going to insulate with foam or ?One improvement I made was to put a 4th jack on , origionally had 3 , something to think about while it's apart . Have some pics of mine in Vintage Kin under "68 avion TC the new project". Just finished rebuilding the range , couldn't believe how many peices there are to it. Nice to share ideas , good luck.
