Hi, I'm planning on traveling to texas this winter . In particular the Austin and surrounding areas. I'm looking or nice places to stay ( not downtown). any recommendation? Thanks, Nicole

make sure you go to NTAC, NorthTexas Airstream Community, its in Hillsboro Texas. 30 miles north of Austin....Great place to stay.

McKinney Roughs Falls just east of Austin (within daily travel distance) is nice I'm told. I live just west of Austin and if you don't mind less ... Krause Springs is nice.
Also Dripping Springs and Wimberley are excellent. San Marcos (just south in I35) has one of the nicest campgrounds.

Mckinny State park is pretty nice... I don't recall, but i think they DO NOT have sewer at the sites, but it's just in South Austin, a good area.

OH and while you're in Austin, you must eat at "The Clay Pit" Such a great restaurant.

I think you left out a '1' in that... Hillsboro is more like 130 miles north of Austin.

Marble Falls has a nice RV park on Lake LBJ (Sunset Point), that we stayed at recently. It's a great place if you want to spend some time in the Marble Falls (about 60 miles northwest from Austin). Some other places to think about in the Austin "area", would be the Hill Country (Fredericksburg and Kerrville).

The Texas State park system will only allow you to stay 14 consecutive days (I've heard there are some that don't enforce this however).

McKinney Falls, is still a bit of a mess right now (they had some major flooding ... again ... It's all open again, but it's not the park it was a few years ago). Another State Park close to Austin that I really enjoy is Lockhart State Park, and that's again a short drive from Austin. Some state parks, like Enchanted Rock do not offer camping in RVs. But there are several state parks in the area if you want to use them. However, most in the Austin area do not offer full sewer hookups, only water and electric, but do have dump stations available.

Camp Ben McCulloch is a private campground located just southwest of Austin in the Texas Hill Country. The campground, which hosts several music and other weekend festivals during the year, is across the road from the locally-popular Salt Lick BBQ restaurant. In summer, you can swim or float an inner tube in the crystal clear Onion Creek that borders the campground. The camp has restrooms, water and electrical hookups, but no sewer connection or dump station.

Hillsboro is closer to Dallas than Austin, it's maybe 30 miles north of Waco/ closer to 130 miles north of Austin. (I lived in Austin for 35 years).

McKinney Falls is a nice state park. 12 or so miles from downtown, off of William Cannon. Seek a site in the lower loop, much better tree cover and closer to the creek.

If you're willing to stay an hour away from Austin, try Blanco State Park (they have 9 or 10 full hookup sites with sewer), Guadalupe River State Park, Bastrop S.P. or Lockhart S.P. Each within an hour's drive.

Inks Lake State Park is really nice. Since it is a state park no fishing license is required. Many of the sites have full hook ups

Fredericksberg area, 1.25 hrs west of Austin. Bandera as well. The hill country is lovely. I lived in my trailer in downtown Austin for 5 years recently:-)

Try Blanco Texas not far from Austin stay at Blanco River RV park and cottages. The owners of the Park are fantastic also the town is quaint with an awesome butcher shop where you will find the best steak to put on your grill. YOU MUST EAT at Pieous, in Dripping Springs. Great pizza and hands down the best pastrami you have ever eaten. The owner of Franklin BBQ taught the owners of Pieous how to brine and smoke the pastrami it is out of this would. If you don't think it's the best send me your check and I'll pay for your meal! Enjoy!!!! My mouth is watering just writing this message to you! Austin has gotten very crowed in the last few years if I were you I would stay outside of Austin and make day trips into town. There are so many cute towns within a 30-45 min drive. I lived in Austin for 15 yrs and enjoyed Dripping Springs, Blanco, Wimberly, San Marcos, Buda, Bastrop, and the Canyon Lake area, which has many Rv parks.

Be aware of all of the flooding we currently have in Texas, especially since many of the state parks are located near rivers. Austin has so much to offer, you may want to spend part of your time in the city. The best RV park for location, is Pecan Grove RV Park at 1518 Barton Springs Rd. 1(512) 472-1067. It's just down the road from Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool, and within biking distance of downtown. There are also numerous restaurants within walking distance. Be sure and make a reservation ASAP.

If you wont to be somewhat close to town try La Hacienda. It's near Lake Travis just west of town off FM 620. We've stayed there and its nice. Try not driving in Austin during morning or evening rush hours. Very congested.

NTAC is a little farther than 30 miles-more like 90

You specifically said not downtown. So far the responses have respected that but I'm going to ask WHY?

There is a very interesting "campground" (I use that term loosely) and it's very close to downtown and allows you to experience Austin in an entirely different manner compared to driving in for the day. If you want to know more you can find it on Allstays.

As for not downtown... the state parks in the area are all good. Many people have already posted their favorites. There are also several county parks as well as private campgrounds within driving distance. Be sure to consider Shiner, TX - it's in the area and has some interesting sites in the area - and good beer too!

Not sure what you mean by nice places to stay. One persons junk is another persons treasure. Once again, Allstays will show you where most of these places are located.
