Atwixt Milwaukee and Jackson Center

All,

I'm deep in the maw of trip planning and hoping to fill in with a good stop between Milwaukee and Jackson Center. (I am assuming that I want to avoid Chicago.)

Also, any recommendations on a nicer place to stay that puts me within spitting distance of the Airstream Factory and all the other attractions nearby? We plan to be there for about 4 days and I have kids to keep occupied.

Got any suggestions?

Thanks!

MilWaukee stop

Hey Theil,
I don t know how your going to avoid Chicago if your planning on going to Jackson center, but as for Milwaukee , not to much camping close by. Kid stuff in mil, the zoo, for little kids, you got the Betty Brinn children's museum. It's on the lakefront. Milwaukee is known as the biggest small town in America. We re not a Chicago. In summer you can go biking around metro mil. Camping in and around metro Milwaukee kinda spare north or south in the kettle moraine area you got camping. Depends on what your looking for.
Now I got a personal question for you.
Did you go to Marquette, graduate in 85 work for Fritos lay up in rhinelaner. If so, hi Chris and Mary.

This particular Jellystone RV park is a child's dream with all the water slides and activities. And worn out children are good for the following day's drive.

Theil - yes, avoid Chicago. We rolled down 30 after skirting the Chicago area and picked up 33 out of Fort Wayne. It was a nice tow after the wind died down. Several stops were in the consider plan, but they seemed lacking at first look. The end result was that we pulled into the Airstream employee parking lot at about 1:00am and called it good for the night. It was a Saturday, and that is a bit different than norm as we expected no company in the am.

Good luck with your plan. Might give Jefferson Township Community Park a look. It's a half dozen sites, but might be a bust as it is close to a rail spur.

Sometimes best is out of the way. Sometimes it's at the local Walmart. Pat

Edit - we did pick up some character from a road gater, so take care.

Chatting with family it looks like we might skip Milwaukee and instead head south to Cedar Rapids... then to Jackson Center from there.... so some stop midway between Cedar Rapids and Jackson Center is needed...

A few places near the factory are these following campgrounds. I've stayed at all of them and like each one:

Indian Lake SP:

Grand Lake SP:

Lake Loramie SP:

Also the Wapakoneta KOA and you can tour the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum (Of course he's from Wapakoneta, OH):

A little father South is the Dayton KOA near the Air Force Museum which is fantastic and free!

And of course there always the Airstream factory Terra Port campground but not a whole lot to do right in Jackson Center. But do try the Haas Brothers Pizza right in Jackson Center (no website). Great pizza but they're only open a few hours per day in the afternoon.

If you're taking I-80 from Cedar Rapids east as far as northern Indiana then the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes State Park might be good candidates for a stop.

I'll also second the recommendation of a visit to the Air Force Museum if you've never been there, or haven't been there in the last five-ten years - and its free. If time makes that impossible, the small Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta is interesting and shouldn't take more than a couple hours to visit, though it does charge admission.

Here is an option. Cross the lake and drive down the Michigan side:

I think the Wapakoneta KOA is our most likely campground, so it sounds like we'll be at ground zero for some good sights...
