At RV parks

I have never used an A/S at an rv park[or anywhere actually]...all we do is work on it!!! Maybe someday we can actually use this thing [it's really a lawn ornament].

I was just wondering how you use a computer when you are living in an A/S? Just in case we actually finish this thing and get to use it before we die!!! Do I sound frustrated!

We want to sell all our stuff and house and live in this thing on the road for a while when we are shopping for a sail boat and I don't know how the connection is made available to a computer when we stay at parks since I have never been to one. Are there usually cable connections or just modular jacks and what kind of account do I need to have to use them. We have a cable modem now so I sorta understand that. I know folks must have some arrangement.

I know folks use computers in hotels ...I see the hook-ups...but I don't understand how that works either...I only know how to use mine at home or my husband's at his office.

Guess I sound sorta cyber-stupid but I gotta start somewhere finding out.

Most campgrounds have modem hookups that you can use. I've never had much trouble. I know that others use their cell phones, but I've never done that.

Phone/Cable hookup

Some campgrounds/resorts have phone hookups at the campsite. You can use your laptop there.

I have added cable and phone hookups to mine.

Another view. This is right above the TV shelf, which could also be used for a laptop.

Wow, I have never been to a campground with a "modem connection", at the campsite.
I hope more campgrounds go to Wi-Fi internet service. KOA is supposed to be launching this year.

We were at Ocean Lakes CG, in Myrtle Beach, SC and they had phone & cable hookups at each site. Sit under your awining and use the internet and watch the ocean just 150' away.

wow

Thanks for all the great info...I think I understand but I have a few more questions...

Doesn't it cost money to access the net? Do they charge to use this plug in? Just the plain ones, I mean? I can see why the fancy ones are more cuz they are so fast. does the internet access like I get with comcast now come with the plau charge? Is this just a throw-in in all these hotel rooms I stay in that business travelers with notebook computers use?

So I don't need some special account...I just keep my old yahoo email address and use it while traveling.

Maybe I need to install one of these plugs along with catv hook-ups while building a desk unit in my trailer since we are rebuilding the whole interior thing.

I wonder where the wires would come out of the trailer? where the battery is and the access door is on the side? I hate to just drop them out the window!

If there is someone who has done this kind of wiring and can help me with some specifics like the kind of receptacles and where the wire go I will send them a piece of my pottery!!!

I'm not helpless...I did a whole 200amp circuit breaker box in a 1956 house so I can do it with the right info...thanks a bunch.

If anyone knows of any pictures of interior electronic skematics I think I could pick it out to...also any media center pix would be nice...I m sure some wizards have done some nice ones in A/S's.

We have such a ways to go but are enjoying it...the help here is so enjoyable.

Lexxy the only cost mentioned was the $5.00 /day charge to access the net . I have been to hotels that give you broadband connection for free ,unlimited use as well ! I also cant wait for more Rv parks to go Wi-Fi.Oh one more thing Lexxy if you have a Dail up service like AOL ,ones with nation wide numbers you can just use the the phone line hook up at the site .that way your using your own ISP .

Another alternative is to go Satellite.
Cost is a little bit more however, about $120.00 / month.
I plan on working from my Airstream, as I am a Computer Database Developer.
Satellite services I've checked on have coverage all the way from Canada to Mexico.
Note, these provide Internet only, and not TV, at least so far.

Where did you get the phone/cable connections that will fit into that standard outlet cover?

I got the ones I used at Builder's Square. There were GE, they should be fairly widely distributed, Home Depot, Radio Shack, etc.

They are the Leviton Quick Port system. They have blank plates then you purchase the inserts for them. One phone and one cable.

A little more expensive this way but it worked.

If you use the 800 number provided by AOL, ("ones with nation wide number", implies this, at least to me) This is gonna cost you 6$ per hour~!~
It's by far cheaper to pay the 5$ per day usuage for WI-FI AND, get broadband to boot~!~

IMHO

Home Depot or Lowes both carry a great line deal of home audio/ networking/cable parts in the Electrical Isle. An ealier post referred to the Leviton company. They are designed to be customized to make many types of configurations. Check them out. Make sure you use RG6 cable as it is best for Digital Signal.
