Assateague Island National Seashore May 4-6

Hi Folks!

I'm getting ready to take Cylon (my new name for my 28' International CCD) out for the first time this coming weekend for her shake-down voyage, May 4-6, just a weekend on the coast at Assateague Island National Seashore.

I'll be on the Bayside "A" loop if anybody happens to also be heading out there this weekend and would like to drop by.

Cheers,

Jim S.

We enjoyed our stay at Bayside C-48. Huge site and great view towards the bridge.

Have a great time.

Heading to Assateague soon. Anybody know which I should bring my road bike or my mountain bike?

I recall the bike trails being paved, but I usually take my mountain bike because it handles the beach/sandy environment better. Watch out for the ponies, and the gifts they leave on the trails and roads.

Thanks SR, that's what I figured. I'll probably bring one of each as I'll no doubt do some riding on the mainland as well.

Mmmm, I'm envious.

We headed there last year, stopped short at the bridge and the sign that said "no pets allowed on the island"---not even in your vehicle.

Have a great trip and please post pictures!

Good with the bad

I've seen beautiful pictures of wild horses and sunsets, that friends have taken there. I have also heard horror stories about mutant alien bugs that will eat you alive.

Road bike is fine (so is mt. bike if you prefer) Nice and flat so you can really get rolling if you wish.

TAKE LOTS OF BUG SPRAY. Because of the warm winter this year, the bugs can be pretty bad, although this can vary with the wind direction etc.

In any event, have a great time, Assateague National Seashore is one of our favorites (we like it better than the adjacent State Park).

Have fun!

BTW, spring and fall are a great time to visit Assateague if you want to avoid bugs. We go down in March and April and usually again late Sept. early Oct. For our summer trips to the beach we stay at Delaware Seashore Park above Bethany Beach. More or less it's a big parking lot (each site does have some space, but nothing like Assateague). But it has full hookups and nice beach and lots of fishing if you are into that. Most importantly, usually few, if any bugs. We generally head to Bethany for the day as it's more fun for our daughter with (in addition to the beach) a small boardwalk, a number of stores, and good food (more than the usual beach fair if you wish).

One more: Doug and Maggie: pets are allowed in the National Seashore but not in the state park.

Truth! The bugs are especially plentiful when the wind is from the west, or not blowing at all. I was stationed at Delaware Seashore for about 16 years, and your description of the campground was accurate. It ain't pretty, but it's pretty close to the water, and some of the best fishing around. We live about 20 minutes away, but usually avoid the place until the fall when the bugs, and the crowds, subside. Here's our favorite state park campground:

Camping at Trap Pond State Park, Laurel, Delaware

It has great bike trail around the pond, too.

Really?? Where the wild horses are??

I thought I remembered turning around at the bridge. We'll have to go back, research a bit.

One of the disadvantages of day-to-day planning, as we generally do, is that sometimes there are surprises.
