Anyone use a scooter for errands?
I'm getting a bit old for the motorcycles, but I've always wanted a scooter. The big three all make nice products. Some are capable of 100 mph and cross country tours, but also cost $10,000. Vespa's are cute but overpriced, IMO.
I was wondering if anyone carried a scooter to run to the store or the scenic vistas? How does it work out?
I'm thinking of a carrier on the front of the TV.

I have a 1986 Yamaha Riva 125cc. I carry it in the bed of the truck and carry aluminum ramps to get it in and out. We really enjoy it for touring the parks and communities in our travels. It'll run 57mph with one up and about 52 with two...but it has tiny wheels and I really don't like the feel of it above 50, so that limits us somewhat. Part of me wants to get a vintage 350cc Honda, circa 1968 - 1972...and part of me wants to get a used Silverwing scooter. I have permission from the boss lady, but then I think my scooter is fine, If I want to run the highway, I should take the TV.

I've owned a couple of scooters before I bought my current motor scooter. The first was a Vespa 250ie, and the second was a Yamaha Majesty. Both were 250 cc scooters. Here in Missouri any scooter or cycle 50 cc's or greater requires you to have motor cycle plates and also carry a motor cycle endorsement on your drivers license.
My plan had been to carry one of the scooters in the back of my van to use when camping. Unfortunately my wife needs a mobility cart and that took precedence on space so the scooters never did come with us.
Be aware that some campgrounds do not allow motorcycles or scooters to be driven on their roads. In other cases they maybe restricted for travel in and out of the campgrounds only. Which means you can't use them to get to the bath house or for joy riding in the campground. In any case it's always good to review the usage rules for the campground you are staying in.
Also verify motorcycle laws for the state you are traveling in. In Missouri all motorized scooters or cycles over 50cc require you to provide proof of insurance, license plates, and helmet use on public roads. Most public campgrounds I have been in consider the campground roads as public.
My recommendation is that you would have a minimum engine size of 100 cc if you are traveling on public roads. Top end of a 49cc scooter is about 40 mph and may be lower depending on the size of the rider and the terrain of the road. You don't want to be a hazard on the road with a slow scooter.
Hope this helps.

Yes, I've had a motorcycle endorsement for years and there's not a lot of restrictions here in Fl.
I'm thinking of 250-400 cc. for my ample girth.

The 300 cc Vespa, although expensive, can/will go anywhere on any highway.

Yep it's a really nice scooter. I used it for the urban riding and the Yamaha for rural rides.

Not a scooter but this is what I use for the quick runs to the store.
http://www.catrike.com/trail
Quiet and has helped reduce my ample girth.
easy to load and store also.

Here is the solution my wife and I found. Mate Bikes. Electric foldable bicycles that fit in the bed of the truck. About 48 lbs. each. @0 " wheels.
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/m...ever-bicycle#/
The company is producing 500 bikes a week and the Indiegogo startup will have them all shipped by May. !00 mile range on pedal assist and 25 mph on the battery.
Watch the video.

Well, you folks sure made me happy that I hung onto my 1975 Honda CB400f. It might take up a little room in the TV but...a great size for exploring the backroads.

The little Vino will go 50 mph initially and gradually increase to 55 mph if you just keep holding the throttle wide open.

My wife and I used to ride Honda Metropolitans, 49cc engine, 35 mph downhill with a tailwind. We had a blast. We camped at Panama City Beach (during bike week) and sure got some strange looks.

Motorcycle much more stable than scooter I think personally, small tires always a problem. Have been carrying 225-250-450 enduro on front of my TV for years, contact me and I will send you pic of my current carrier, it mounts on the front two bullhorns that I have modified a bit.

Couple of Vespa's - enhanced, of course, to keep up and to surprise the unsuspecting Harley riders who ocassionally look down on scooter riders, ha, ha. And yes, they DO require that you keep your motorcycle endorsement. We figured we spent the big $ to have the Airstream so may as well have the coolest, coveted scooters too. We live at the beach so they were convenient for all kinds of get around activities. Multiple use justifies all the toys in our world. Whatever floats your boat, you know. YOLO 😉

A little outside-the-box thinking here but we use Segway's. They get 24 miles per charge, the batteries last 8 - 9 years and they're allowed on most roads & sidewalks and they're way too fun. There's also quite a few cargo carrying options available including a variety of saddlebag containers and handlebar bags.

Scooter
For years I have been an avid motorcycle rider but lately the scooter has its appeal. We love to go to Key West and a scooter is perfect. I also have a Rampage lift in back of my Chevy 2500 TV, making it easy to get my BMW C650GT Scooter in the truck. Yes, I am a wimp and will not ride a scooter up a ramp. Push the button and the Rampage does the work

I had been walking up one ramp while throttling the scooter up the other. That's pretty easy, but while backing it down one can't see the location of the rear wheel on the ramp because the body is too fat...and the front wheel wants to slide. As I am aging it is becoming too risky. So I got an ATV winch, made a mount for the rear stake pocket, a Pulley for the tie down at the front bed wall and I winch it in and out. I also replaced the steel cable with a synthetic winch cord. Works well, is small and light.

Have hauled both 150 Vespas before. Pain in the butt to load and unload and except here in Florida drivers don't seem to think you belong on the road even if keeping up with traffic. Tried them in Georgia,nc and Ohio, my life is worth too much to fool with the drivers in those states. I've got over 300,000 mc miles so,I know what I'm talking about. Something about a scooter or bicycle on the road brings out the worst in most people. Now here in town we ride them all the time. But with 40000 college students we are not out of the ordinary, just older. I can carry both scooters, it's tight, because I have a 3500 pound payload rating.

I think the solution is three ramp sections, one for the scooter and two for your feet. I've loaded many motorcycles in trailers, and things can go wrong fast, so I don't want to be 4' off the ground when I tip over. (Going up is easy, down is hard)
Or you could do like this guy!

I carry a 2002 50cc Malaguti Scooter in back of my 2009AI slightly enhanced. It will do 65 mph 60mpg on level ground very stable, easy to load-unload, it's a one person job. Very nice to get around when shopping, getting pizza etc.
One drawback is access to rear door when loaded.
I ride motorcycles so I'm very comfortable on a scooter, have over 400K on my Beamers
